bishwop, for some prank-based inspiration. ♥
The hot August sun was low, and a slow breeze was gently rippling the tall grass. The sky was stained pink and orange. It was quiet, apart from the low buzz of insects in the air.
Teddy Lupin surveyed the landscape and nodded, satisfied. Conditions were perfect. His pockets were stuffed with half the contents of a Blaze Box, and there were strategically placed buckets of water all over the field. He clicked his fingers twice before executing a carefully practised hand signal which he hoped conveyed both mystery and authority; moments later, a loud rustling indicated that James and Albus were on the move.
“Right,” he said, turning to Freddie, “let’s go. Are you feeling suitably stealth?” He squinted at the round, freckled face. “You don’t look very stealth. Can’t you camouflage yourself a bit?” At Freddie’s utterly blank look, he explained “Just try and blend in, yeah? Like with my hair.” He pushed the grass -coloured mop out of his eyes, briefly contemplating a hair band; he immediately dismissed the idea as shamefully girly.
“Ah,” said Freddie, knowingly, and rubbed his face in the dirt.
Teddy said, “Close enough,” marvelling at the kid’s seemingly boundless enthusiasm for all things filthy, and began to wriggle his way, stealthily, across the grass.
The target was in sight. Victoire was lying on her stomach, reading; from where he was he could make out one pale leg, the sole of the foot upturned. Like a sunflower, thought Teddy, then shook the image from his head and focused on the job in hand.
He had a sudden, inexplicable urge to tickle her foot with a long blade of grass.
“I know what you’re thinking,” said Victoire, without turning round. Teddy really hoped that she didn’t. “If you throw anything at me, I swear, I’ll make my mother do something terrible to you. Something French.”
The idea of being on the receiving end of a sinister French punishment did not appeal to Teddy, so he cleared his throat and got to his feet. Grinning, Victoire rolled over and stood up, planting her hands on her hips. Unfortunately, James interpreted Teddy’s inglorious surrender as the signal to lob his half of the Blaze Box in their general direction.
In an instant, the air was full of dancing sparks and loud, loud noises. The world flashed blue and scarlet and emerald; the lights caught Victoire’s hair and she was aflame with colour. Teddy had to tilt his head to look at her, she was so bright. He couldn’t say exactly how much time passed before the sparks floated away across the field.
“Fireworks?” said Victoire eventually. “The whole of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes at your disposal, and you choose fireworks?”
“It’s a classic,” muttered Teddy.
“Tried and tested,” piped up Freddie from his spot on the ground.
“Did it work?” James yelled across the field. “I’ve got another one! D’you want that too?”
“No!” shouted ad Teddy and Victoire at the same time, but James had already used his initiative (something which, in Teddy’s opinion, James should never, ever do) and now a huge, fiery dragon was speeding towards them. Teddy used his initiative and flung himself at Victoire.
He felt something very hot and very fast graze the back of his head. It gradually dawned on him that he was sprawled on top of Victoire, pinning her to the ground. There was an elbow lodged in his spleen, and he wasn’t sure who it belonged to. He had grass in his ear. Two deep blue eyes were fixed on his dark ones. Teddy opened his mouth, but found that he seemed to have temporarily lost the power of speech, which was awkward, because Victoire didn’t seem to be saying anything either.
At this moment, Freddie helpfully threw a strategically placed bucket of water over them.
Spluttering, Victoire shoved him away and jumped to her feet. Wringing out her skirt with all the dignity she could muster, she turned to Teddy and said, “You are the most idiotic person I have ever, ever met. Why? Why would you do that to me? Why would you think this was a good idea?”
Because all his energy was focused on trying very hard not to look at the way her damp shirt was clinging to her skin, Teddy said “Wuh?”
Rolling her eyes at his complete and utter uselessness, Victoire span on her heel and squelched away, pausing only to inform James and Albus that just because they had twigs in their hair, it did not mean she couldn’t see them.
“Nnugh,” said Teddy, feeling rather bewildered by the whole thing, and possibly slightly concussed.
“There, there,” said Freddie, bracingly. Teddy rubbed some more dirt in his face.

But you should tewtelly keep writing fic; you have a natural gift.

Date: 2007-08-23 01:17 am (UTC)Every single line of this thing is perfect. I could quote my favourite bits...but...HONESTLY...I would end up quoting the ENTIRE FIC.
I love when Freddie rubs his face in the dirt. Genius. (And by 'genius' I am referring to you, not him). Loved James too! I just love how they look up to him as some kind of god.
Who wouldn't?This line was classic because literally a second before I read it I anticipated what he was going to have done to his hair. Grass coloured!! HEH. AND THEN IT WAS TRUE.
Oh, Teddy. You're silly.
MORE MORE MORE! You are never allowed to stop pumping these out. *grins* You know that, right?

Date: 2007-08-23 01:39 am (UTC)BLESS YOU HEARTILY FOR YOUR KIND, KIND WORDS.
That was a vital character choice. Does Freddie pick dirt up and rub it on himself? No. Freddie bends down to that dirt and smooshes his face in it. It's the little things...
Oooh, I quite like this! Because the boys love Teddy for the awesome, and Teddy has to hang round with 3 little kids. And possibly Hugo. Although who really cares about Hugo? Fun dynamics, anyhoo. Lots of eye rolling.
OF COURSE IT WAS TRUE. No other colour would have been quite so stealth.
He is silly. I actually love him.
I'M RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO DO IN A FIELD! I don't think I'm ready for smut yet *hyperventilates at thought of smutty!Teddy, though*
Also, hey there, Oliver Wood. How you doin'? You comin' back for the Deathly Hallows movie?
no subject
Date: 2007-08-23 01:53 am (UTC)LOL YES. That's exactly why it was so hilarious.
I KNOW. I was just thinking this. I mean, I ACTUALLY THINK I MIGHT. I know I keep saying this but...I THINK I REALLY, ACTUALLY DO. I kind of keep forgetting he's a fictional character! HE IS SO REAL TO ME. /teen!angst
I know, it's quite a...thought...isn't it. *goes dreamy*
You could do some kind of...post-smut...embarrassing...awkwards...afterwards conversation or something. I DON'T KNOW. It's a hard decision. *ponders* BUT, LIKE, YOU CAN'T STOP. I'm sure there are far more things to do in a field.
Aaah, Oliver Wood. You tided us over nicely through those two-movies-which-did-not-feature-Marauders. And I love you for it. And, oh! to be the bludger in that bludger-wrestling scene.
=O I'VE JUST REALISED. YOU KNOW WHAT, IF HE HAD DIFFERENT HAIR, HE WOULD LOOK ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE HOW I PICTURE TEDDY.
I HOPE HE IS IN DH. I doubt it, though, to be honest. They managed to cut him out of the ENTIRE THIRD FILM. Cutting him out of one bit in DH would not be hard. Plus, the Quidditch team turning up always FELT random anyway. Well, I suppose we can live in hope.
But if they don't cut that scene, I HOPE THEY DON'T CUT OTHER SCENES INSTEAD. LIKE, SAY, THE GRIMMAULD PLACE LUPIN SCENE.
I think my future happiness depends on whether or not the Grimmauld Place scene is in the film. I need to see David Thewlis act it. I really, really need to.

Date: 2007-08-23 02:02 am (UTC)I know, I know. I think we should seek help, because if we keep helping each other, we'll end up somewhere baaaad.
Speaking of, I TOTALLY have to write post-smut-awkwardness-in-the-field. Because, really, there's only so many ways I can credibly make them lie down/fall over/save people from fireworks.
THEY STOLE THE CUP FROM HIM! HE WAS SUPPOSED TO CRY TEARS OF JOY!
AIIIIIEEE THE GRIMMAULD PLACE LUPIN SCENE! So much love. And I hardly ever do this, but I totally pictured David Thewlis doing it AS I WAS READING. I would pay silly money to see that man knock over chairs. AND THIS IS WHY THEY HAVE TO DO LUPIN/TONKS. That, and "too old... too poor... too dangerous". I've been waiting to hear him say that for a loooooong time.
I IMAXed the film again today (doorway!leaning! silent!grief!), and the audiobook should be arriving tomorrow!

Date: 2007-08-23 02:09 am (UTC)I can't believe I never saw the film more than once. I am mad. Because I think, after the first time, I would a) enjoy it more and b) appreciate the Lupin moments that there were, because there were FEW but they were good. Doorway lean! Cool explanation of Voldemort stuff! Awesome appearance at the DoM! Whip-like hexing! Grabbing Harry/Silent!grief! And that was it, I think. WHERE WAS THE POST-SWM FIREPLACE SCENE WITH SIRIUS. Dammit.
Actually, silent!grief actually annoyed me. a bit. Because, okay, I get that it was a DRAMATIC CINEMA MOMENT and all that, but I wanted to hear Lupin's voice. Because his voice breaks! And it's saaaaaad. And, OH, the angst.
Oh my God, that was the first time I remember tearing up at an HP book. "If only a Dementor were around, Harry felt he could have performed the best Patronus." MEEP.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.
Maybe. But not yet. I AM STILL IN A HAPPY PLACE RIGHT NOW. And there aren't many happy places left that I associate with the Lupin family.

Date: 2007-08-23 02:37 am (UTC)Whip-like hexing!
*makes whip noise* SO HOT. Seriously, I cannot understand why people don't love The Thewlis.
IT WILL BE ON THE DVD, IT WILL. *crosses fingers*
Extended fight sequence = more whip-cracking? And possibly an edit with Lupin's lines?
no subject
Date: 2007-08-23 02:54 am (UTC)YES! Didn't the list of DVD features say "Alternate ending" or something? Or maybe that was the opening sequence...EITHER WAY, EXTENDED! And also there was an extra on the DoM Battle, so Thewlis should be in that!
I cannot wait for this DVD. I am literally going to be pausing every single frame, especially in the DoM, trying to find a moment where Remus and Tonks are in the same shot.
I saw an animated icon of the whip bit and literally was hypnotised for about ten minutes just...STARING. I like the camera angle, too, in that bit.
There are people who don't?? Wait, you don't mean...there aren't people who actively go around actively disliking him and bitching, are there?! You just mean 'can't believe everyone is not madly in love with him', RIGHT? Because if there was some kind of Thewlis-hate going around I might die of shame at the human race.
Also, re:what you said about seeing Thewlis acting the Grimmauld Place when you read it, I get that too! Actually, that scene was weird. He kept chopping and changing between book!Remus (slightly thinner face and slightly longer hair) and film!Remus for me. But the Seven Potters/Fallen Warrior scene was DEFINITELY Thewlis-like, as was the Shell Cottage bit and Hogwarts bit.

Date: 2007-08-23 02:09 am (UTC)FOR THE WHOLE EXTRACT. It was icky.
None of the older prompts doing anything for you? I'm toying with the spider-web thing, kinda. There's some heavy-handed death imagery to be milked from that, surely :p
Also, I was meaning to ask, I have a Marauder-obsessed friend who would LOVE your Teddy!map!fic. I know it's flocked, so would you mind terribly if I copied 'n' pasted it in an email or something so she could read it? And you are absolutely free to refuse this if it makes you uneasy, I just want to share the love :)

Date: 2007-08-23 02:20 am (UTC)But I was going to do 4 drabbles for each of the four lines. It's all OoTP-era. Up until the end bit, but I haven't decided on that yet really. It might still be OoTP-era,verging into HBP, or it might be way later.
"He was my North, my South, my East and West"
[Drabble of her spinning around and Apparating to Grimmauld Place for the first time. And she sort of loses her balance and keeps spinning hen she gets there and there's a figure in front of her and it looks like HE'S the one that's spinning around HER - (north, south, east west-GEDDIT?) - and then he stops her. And then they greet eachother and stuff.]
"My working week, and my Sunday rest"
[Drabble of her sutmbling in to G. Pl. after a late shift. And he is the kitchen and they have a conversation]
"My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song"
[Drabble that takes place sometime when they are together maybe a morning/lunch. Cuteness ensues.]
"I thought that love would last for ever. I was wrong"
[Drabble of EITHER:
1. End of OoTP. They are sad and angsty about Sirius, and then he tells her he has to leave to go underground with the wolves)
OR
2. Skipping WAY WAY ahead to Battle of Hogwarts and her watching Dolohov kill him. This was what I was originally going to do, and I guess it would be more angsty or whatever, but then I worked out the other three lines and I think the fic jumping forward THAT much might make it seem a bit...unbalanced?]
I don't know, I could change the second and third lines to make time move a bit more quickly. I guess the second line could be them together post-HBP. And then the 3rd line is him returning to her in DH? But I don't really think those fit the lines. ARGH too many decisions.

Date: 2007-08-23 02:32 am (UTC)I suppose it depends on whether you want to hit The Big Moments, like him leaving etc, or just have little scenes in their relationship. Like, your idea for "my noon, my midnight" could easily be shifted into Tonks' pregnancy, (after his return?) if you wanted to spread them out more.
But, I really like this. DO IT. :)

James had already used his initiative (something which, in Teddy’s opinion, James should never, ever do)
I LOVE THAT LINE SO MUCH XD
Teddy's initiative rocks.
You know, I think this might be my favourite so far. James, Freddie and Albus are the most adorable little things ever! *hugs them all* The fic was wonderful! Absolutely loved it. <3

Date: 2007-08-24 07:38 pm (UTC)Oh, Freddie. You are a fool. *chuckles fondly*
Actually they are all fools. Especially James, because he is 'so like Ron', and Ron is my favourite idiot.
Seriously? I really didn't like it until I finished and tweaked a few lines, it just felt iffy and OOC and was making me pull my hair out. I wrote it on a train like JKR, though! And I like it now. :)

Already it's very sexy.
I loved Freddie, James and Albus' little cameos, peeking and poking out from behind grass and mud and Teddy musing that James should never, ever use his initiative.
It also struck me here how beautiful and heartbreaking it is that the descendands of Lupin, Potter and Weasley can lark about like this on such a lovely day. The mention of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes sent a little jolt through me at the thought of Fred and George but made me smile at the triumph that these post-DH fics represent.
And then there's Teddy and Victoire. I'm looking forward to reading your other ficlets asap- I want these two to be completely fleshed out for me and you're the one to see it done xXx

I am actually incapable of writing SAD Teddy/Victoire at this moment in time. Everyone's suffered enough, dammit! And if I'm writing Teddy, the loss of Remus doesn't hurt quite so much.
I love these guys, I really do. Let me know what you think of the others!
*heads over to ff.net* I've got me some Maurauders fic to read...
