sophieisgod: (Marie Antoinette)

After waiting for nigh on 4 months, since it was cruelly and prematurely pulled from UK cinemas, I FINALLY got to see Marie Antoinette last night. I knew it had had mixed reviews, to say the least (I was on the side of the believers), but having seen the trailer, seen the plethora of prettypretty icons, bought the Antonia Fraser book and repeatedly listened to the soundtrack, I was not disappointed.

I'm a huge Sofia Coppola fan anyway (Virgin Suicides is hazy love), so I knew she could be relied on to bring the pretty. I'm also pretty used to her dreamlike pacing and was thus well prepped (Dirty!) for this. Anyway, the pretty was duly brought (I spent half the time mentally screencapping the DVD I now have to buy on the day it comes out), there was cake!porn a-plenty, a completely kick-arse soundtrack, and cameos from all sorts of righteous people. Marriane Faithful? Present and correct, sans Mars Bar. Tom Hardy, one my lovely obscure boys since The Virgin Queen? Deliciously sombre. Rose Byrne? Made of awesome.

Kirsten Dunst is undeniably radiant, and she didn't actually piss me off in this, which is an achievement. I think it can probably be attributed to her relatively limited number of lines. Still.

Also, the merits of the big screen. I've spent 4 months thinking the black stripe across her face at the costume ball was Adam & The Ants style face paint. I now know it's voile tpe stuff. Woop.

Okay, so if I had more time I'd write a witty rewiew, but I don't, so I won't. I really liked it.

I have to go and eat some cake now.

Tom Hardy was like, my number one reason to go see the film. I liked the movie itself well enough, but the soundtrack was FTW. Seriously, the 1780s and the 1980s on 2 CDs? I'm thinking yes.

Tom Hardy is sexual. Ahh, Robert Dudley. I didn't realise he was in it until I saw his name in the credits! And then I spent most of the film hoping he was the guy she was going to have an affair with, so we could see him take his shirt off. Sigh. And the soundtrack completely makes my head explode with joy. I've had Natural's Not In It in my head for the past 2 months. This is a good thing.

When I was bored out of my head over the Christmas holidays, I spent a whole day in my jammies lying in bed, reading the Antonia Fraser, listening to the soundtrack on repeat and eating cake (I also tried to make my hair pouffy by blow-drying it upside down, but it wasn't quite happening). It was the best day ever. Well, it was pretty good.

Also, I hope you don't mind that I stole your icon and immediately used it in my journal. The pretty made me do it.

Tom Hardy was the first Robert Dudley I actually liked lusted. In fact, I sort of hated him before hand. Joesph Fiennes might have done that. But then there was Jeremy Irons, and every was cool between me and Rob.

Jeremy Irons made everything cool between me and paedophiles. It's a strange gift he has.

Also, don't be too hard on Joseph Fiennes. He really exacerbated the crush my 10 year old self already had on Shakespeare, and for that there will always be a special bond between us.

Ah. See, I LOVED Shakespeare in Love, HATED Joseph Fiennes. There's something about him I just don't like, and it felt like he played Robert in exactly the same manner as Shakespeare. I personally prefer Ralph, but that's in terms of acting. I don't find either of them particularly attractive.

Ralph is also my favourite. This is due in large part to The English Patient, which I love so much that I'm willing to overlook Maid In Manhattan.

And I see what you mean about the Will/ Robert performance similarities. He did make a lot of whiny choices. I don't know, there's so much about SIL that should make me angry, yet it doesn't, and i love it anyway. I blame the score. It makes me hug myself.

Actually, the one thing that makes me angry about SIL is Paltrow STEALING Cate Blanhett's Oscar. Grrrr.

I actually hated The English Patient. Strangely enough, I really started to love him as an actor with Schindler's List. Scary, scary stuff.

What I love about Shakespeare in Love is all the acting by the supporting roles. It may be the one film I like Ben Affleck in, and Geoffry Rush is just made of pure awesome. As are Colin Firth and Judi Dench.

That injustice still rankles me.

Geoffrey Rush rocks my socks in everything, to the extent that I'm looking forward to Pirates 3 despite the inevitable diminishing returns and the pile of wank that was Dead Man's Chest. And I'm thinking, Oscar night, he'd have been rooting for Blanchett.

I love it when Colin Firth gets to be slimy! Have you seen Circle Of Friends? If you haven't, don't, because it's got Chris O'Donnell in it (with an 'Irish' accent- my heart bleeds), but he's a complete lech. With a moustache. It seems with Firth that 'tache = sleaze.

And every time I watch Ben Affleck in that film, I try so hard to hate him, but I just... can't.

Pirates 2 was worth it simply for JackDav scruffing it up and Geoffrey coming back. My sister and I screamed when he walked down the stairs.

No, we aren't nutty fangirls.

Ben Affleck hurts me on the inside. Every single Kevin Smith movie, I ponder over why Smith feels the need to besmirch my hometown with Ben Affleck.

And if you have never seen a Smith movie, go out now and rent Chasing Amy, Clerks, and Dogma. All of those movies to some extent have something to do with where I live. The character Alyssa's alma mater is my current high school. The Quick Stop is minutes away from my old high school, and a favorite hangout. And the church featured at the end of Dogma is actually where one of my best friends goes to church.

Let's just say Middletown has a lot of love for Smith, and he has a lot of love for us. :)

Your HOMETOWN? Are you actually trying to make me explode with jealousy?

I haven't seen Chasing Amy, but I'm fucking obsessed with Clerks. And Dogma? Alan Rickman?! Good Lord. I cannot believe you actually go to The Quick Stop. This is too much, I have to go and lie down. Fuck.

My town once won Britain In Bloom. That's even less exciting than it sounds.

And ScruffyNorrington was far and away the best thing about PotC2, even if he had hardly any fucking screentime. And Tom Hollander rocked the cock, as usual. Fucking Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom! Argh!

A kid that I know works there and often sees Kevin Smith when he's home visiting his mom.

Chasing Amy is AMAZING. The dialoge in it is hilarious and heartbreaking. In addition to my school being constantly referenced, the apartment that Ben Affleck and Jason Lee share is right across the street from where I work.

Just say no to Keira and OB. :p
