excellentnotion. This is my first ficmix, and it kind of jumps around all over the place. Word count is 2040, but let's be honest, a lot of that is lyrics. Also, there is a Coldplay song. Shhh.
01. The Polyphonic Spree - Soldier Girl
I found my Soldier Girl
She's so far away
She makes my head spin around
The two of you, sprinting through the clear sky like arrows, falling and wheeling and young. When you were still young, when the sky was still blue.
Her laughter fills your helmet as her Viper darts in and out of your line of vision, weaving and looping and leaving you behind, just like she always will.
You’re close behind as she streaks through a cloud, and you actually laugh out loud, can practically taste the droplets. She is whooping, of course, high on youth and triumph and the sky.
And then you can’t see her anymore.
“Starbuck? Kara?”
You crane your neck, twisting around to scan for her Viper, uncertain. Nothing. The smile falls from your face.
And then she blazes across the horizon, glorious, taunting you, and your voice is angry but your heart is light.
This is the way you remember her, as you lie in your bunk at night; a half-smile that doesn’t quite reach your eyes.
02. The Decemberists - Red Right Ankle
This is the story of the boys who loved you
Who love you now and loved you then
And some were sweet, some were cold and snuffed you
And some just laid around in bed.
Some had crumbled you straight to your knees
Did it cruel, did it tenderly
Some had crawled their way into your heart
To rend your ventricles apart
This is the story of the boys who loved you
This is the story of your red right ankle.
She remembers them all, even the ones that didn’t have names. She closes her eyes and there they are, kisses heavy with ambrosia and tank tops flung to the floor.
They bleed into one another, sometimes; a dark head bends to kiss her belly, and the lines of Zak and Sam blur until she forces her eyes open, breathless.
Every time he punches her it hurts her heart. She sees his eyes, fierce and hurting and bitter, wants to punch him right back and see his blood, wants to whisper I’m sorry and stroke his honest jaw, wants to grab him at the hips and neck and hair and claim him with her tongue.
Sam lies with her in the dark and doesn’t ask questions anymore. She listens to their breathing, almost allows herself to sink into his shoulder.
She remembers the way the alluvial deposits were soft and grainy under their backs, and how her throat was hoarse with love.
03. Regina Spektor - Us
They made a statue of us
And it put it on a mountain top
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum
Take photographs for fun, for fun
She still gets a kick out of being called “God”, but it isn’t quite the same as it used to be. Now there’s a resonance, an undertone she can’t fully shake off; echoes of Leoben and immortality.
Still, she likes the prestige of being “Starbuck the Hero”, loves the feeling of landing on the deck and cracking open the Viper to cheers and shouts and smiles meant just for her.
Across the hangar, her eyes find Lee’s and hold them. She meets his smile of relief with a tilt of her head, grinning, victorious. Amid the storm of back-clapping, she sees him laugh to himself, and turn away.
Captain Apollo, she thinks, and wonders again how they ended up like this.
04. Coldplay - Yellow
Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah they were all yellow,
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
D'you know you know I love you so
You know I love you so
At first, on New Caprica, she was radiant. Before the storms, when the sky was clear and hope was strong, she was your wife, and she was beautiful.
The wind would blow her ever-longer hair into her face, and she would laugh, and you would kiss her.
You asked her if she missed it, missed flying, and she just shrugged, stared into space for a second. Then she fixed you with those eyes, that grin, and her hand was on your thigh and her mouth was by your ear.
“What do you think?”
She traded her badge for a tattoo, wings for wings, and ever since she grounded herself there’s been a gravity about her that wasn’t there before. Mercurial Kara, unknowable Kara, Kara of the skies - now she is tangible, and you love the dirt on her boots.
She hasn’t looked at the stars since you were married. You don’t ask why.
05. The Futureheads - Hounds of Love
I found a fox, who was caught by dogs, he let me take him in my hands
His little heart, it beat so fast
And I'm ashamed to be running away
From nothing real, I just can't deal with this
I feel ashamed to be there
Among your hounds of loving
And feel your arms surround me
I've always been a coward, and I don’t know what's good for me
“Kara Thrace loves Lee Adama!”
She means it, and it terrifies her.
Her head on his chest in the grey morning light, his arm around her. His heart, beating under her. I love you, I love you.
She strides through the dawn, telling herself it couldn’t last, and she pushes back the flaps of the tent, and she bends over Samuel Anders.
“Hey, Sam. Sam, wake up.”
They stand by the water in front of the gods and give each other their lives, and her heart beats out I love you, I love you. She bites her lip and tries to smile, ignoring the grit in her clothing.
He stares at her in the street, all bewilderment and contempt, and she breaks inside. Dazed, she walks with Sam; walking to her new life, here in the dust with this brave man who she will try to deserve. I love you, I love you.
06. Quindon Tarver - When Doves Cry
How can u just leave me standing
alone in a world that’s so cold?
Maybe I’m just 2 demanding.
Maybe I’m just like my father: 2 bold.
Maybe you’re just like my mother.
She’s never satisfied.
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when doves cry.
These walls are too white. This room is too still, too empty.
Disc in the player; sounds of Dad fill the apartment, loud as it will go.
Splashes of paint, red blue yellow and it starts to make sense. Concentric circles, the edges a little blurred, messy, bleeding.
Always the same, like a dream that’s been there forever. Like a charm, or a talisman. Home.
Brush in the black paint and scrawling across the expanse, frantic, words that don‘t rhyme. Frak you, Momma.
Sliding down the wall, drained, smearing the paint. Start again tomorrow.
Deep, even breaths in time with the piano.
07. Thom Yorke - Analyse
A self-fulfilling prophecy of endless possibility
You roll in reams across the street
In algebra, in algebra
The fences that you cannot climb
The sentences that do not rhyme
In all that you can ever change
The one you're looking for
It gets you down
It gets you down
There's no spark
No light in the dark
Kara Thrace has a special destiny, and she gropes her way blindly towards it, full of denials and protestations. Those who are watching her (have always been watching her) laugh, as she fails resolutely to understand that this is something inescapable, that the very fact of her existence makes her future a foregone conclusion.
Her every movement is plotted out in equations, sweeping limbs and soaring jets and gravitational fields that pull her in, oblivious and perfect. Eyes and mandalas and supernovas and storms, forever dragging her to the centre of something.
She doesn’t think about it. It begins to frighten her.
Leoben steps from the shadows, and takes her by the hand.
08. Arcade Fire - My Body Is A Cage
My body is a cage that keeps me
From dancing with the one I love
But my mind holds the key
You're standing next to me
My mind holds the key
I'm living in an age
That screams my name at night
But when I get to the doorway
There's no one in sight
It happens too often. Something brushes against her, or the scent of steel in the air, and suddenly long fingers are tracing across her jaw, winding softly into her hair until she gasps.
The house was not really a house. Houses shouldn’t have barred gates that lock you in, or fake daughters, or lovers that you kill, ad infinitum.
Hand on the throttle of the Viper, she remembers clenching prison bars, shaking and banging furiously, screaming down an empty hallway. Nobody came for her.
He always came back, every time, dropped a kiss on her forehead. She sat completely still, no tears, dead eyes.
His gaze was steady, clear, full of love and faith. It took her by surprise. He looked at her, whispered her name, and she couldn’t speak. At night, his eyes burned into hers and he tasted like prophecy, truth and lies.
“Do you love him?” Sam asks her, and she freezes.
09. Patrick Wolf - Teignmouth
From my window
I saw two birds lost at sea
I caught our reflection
In that silent tragedy
But with hope prevailing
I draw galleons sailing
In full sail billowing free
So when the birds fly south
We'll reach up and hold their tails
Pull up and out of here
And bridle the autumn gales
Getting back in a Viper feels like nature to her, always, feels like life. All the glass and metal and space of the hangar deck, it captures things, throws them at her for a second; the lives of all these people, reflected and refracted through helmets and windshields and shining wings. Nobody says goodbye anymore, except in that corridor filled with pictures.
She hurtles through the tubes, head flung back for a second to savour the rush. On another world, the wind would stream through her hair like this.
Lee’s voice crackles into her helmet, focus, and she is soaring again, grinning at the edge of annoyance, picturing the clench of that honest jaw.
She breathes easier, now. It is a relief to be in the sky again.
10. Kate Rusby - Planets
I can see,
The planets are aligning for me,
But I cannot read them,
For the future's gone,
And all behind me.
Through this world,
I am wandering, wandering,
A soft breeze blowing,
I am wandering now
On nights like these,
I could fly up to the sky above me,
Like superman,
I would change the course
Of earth below me.
For the first time, she understands what he meant when he said ‘destiny’.
It’s like solving an equation you didn’t know existed, and suddenly nothing is what it used to be and everything makes sense.
She darts through the skies like a new wind, confident, illuminating everything she touches.
Lee’s Viper is ahead of her; grinning like a schoolgirl, she dives towards him, lit from within by their salvation.
11. Oasis - Champagne Supernova
Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams, she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Someday you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky
Aurora was the goddess of the dawn, all rosy light and failed relationships.
A shadow on DRADIS and you chase it; pushing down the flicker of hope that aches like a day-old punch.
You scan the clouds desperately, cursing into nothingness, twisting around in your seat -
And there she is, beside you; glowing and beautiful and true.
“Hi, Lee,” she says.
“Kara?”
Her laughter fills your helmet and your heart fills up with light, and the smile on her face is like a thousand new worlds.
