First of all, I totally heart Cillian Murphy. And Danny Boyle is my new god. Which is a pretty bold statement to make at Easter. Seriously. Sunshine is that good. Spoilers ahead...
Man alive. Wow. Guh. Phnar.
These were pretty much the only noises I made for about half an hour after seeing Sunshine. I refuse to believe that such a visually stunning film was made for £20 million.
Cast, incredible. Cillian Murphy, and his cheekbones, did a stellar job at playing an unfeasibly young and attractive physicist. Chris Evans was manly and didn't suck. Rose Byrne did her usual thing of being rather awesome. I love Cliff Curtis. And I'm very happy that Pete from State Of Play is in a big Hollywood (but not really) fillum. And I really don't want to give anything away, but Louise
templa_otmena, you will squee so hard when you see a certain name in the closing credits. And don't check on the IMDb!
I loved that Cliff Curtis' character was basically addicted to sunlight, and as the film progressed his skin was more and more burnt and peeling. Awesome. And I love that everyone in the cast was non-famous enough for there to be genuine suspense about who would die first (yes, people die, but they tell you that in the trailer! And it's soooo much cooler than in Armageddon.) And the visuals? The interior of the ship is so clinical that whenever there's actual, proper colour, it's so visceral and beautiful that it just smacks you in the face. This baby needs to be IMAXed. ASAP.
And Cillian Murphy wears a vest. This displays his arms and shoulders. Which are covered in freckles. I die. Aw, the boy's come so far since The Way We Live Now. Which is awesome, and which I need to watch again. Hey, Cillian and Daisy Wenham have both worked with Miranda Otto. Random. Anyway, Murphy has these cheekbones, and these eyes, and these eyelashes, and he can be either insanely creepy or insanely hot. Or both at the same time, if you're watching Batman Begins. Is he in the sequel, or did he die? And he's Irish! *le sigh*
And the spacesuits are gold! Gold!
There's been some pretty vigorous 'discussion' in some places about the level of homage, and the level of ripping off classic sci-fi films... I recognised echoes of 2001 and Alien (there's a snarky 'don't split up' joke!), but I think the 'in space, going crazy' genre is small enough for there always to be shared material. I think Danny Boyle called it the 'narrow corridor' film. Anyway, I think there's a pretty big difference between cliche and archetype, and if Icarus II's creepy computer voice makes me think it's trying to take over the ship and destroy mankind or whatever, then so be it. Even if it doesn't, it adds to the general atmosphere of anticipation and tension and paranoia. It's like emotional memory, or whatever.
Anyway, see it, it's very pretty and very awesome, and Cillian Murphy takes his shirt off. Except if you don't like films set in space. But, Cillian Murphy does take his shirt off. Just something to bear in mind.
Ooh, trailers! Okay, we had 28 Weeks Later, which looks better than it should. Rose Byrne, yay! Robert Carlyle, yay! IDRIS ELBA, fucking yeah! Emma, it's sexy angsty Vaughn Rice from Ultraviolet! The one who was in love with Annoying Jane From P&P! We also had Fracture, so yay! for Ryan Gosling, although Anthony Hopkins does seem to be essentially playing Hannibal again. Although, David Strathairn *and* Cliff Curtis? Film, with these Ferrero Rocher you are spoiling us.
When we were at the IMAX t'other day, Louise said she spent half the time watching my reactions, and when we saw Wicked, my sister did the same thing. I suppose when it comes to films (and TV and theatre and books and gigs...) I get pretty into the experience. I gasp, I flail, I put my hands to my mouth. I spend the majority of the time sitting there with a rather gormless grin plastered across my face thinking 'this is fucking excellent'. I'm basically a child.
And I capped the hell out of Wind That Shakes The Barley, so picspam tomorrow!
