This post is being sponsored by AdamandEve.com and they’ve offered us a coupon code for the Bitchery!

Here is the most important information:

AdamandEve.com is offering Smart Bitches readers 50% off a single item plus free standard shipping in the US and Canada with code SMART. Please note: certain exclusions apply, but the coupon covers most of the store.

If you’d like to see some of the toys we’ve featured in previous posts, check out our Adam & Eve tag!

I’ve titled this post “Summer Lovin'” as a reminder to, if you can, slow down and take some time for yourself (and/or your partner) during the lazy season. Also, yes…I hope the song is stuck in your head.

This post is extremely NSFW! You have been warned!

Loveline: The Traveler – $64.99 $32.50 – 50% off with SMART coupon!

This is a sleek and discreet travel vibrator with ten different vibration modes. It also contains a hidden compartment, if you wanted to fill it with lube or toy cleaner without worrying about the 3oz liquids limit. Very clever!

A burgundy small vibrator with a rose cold cap.

Eve’s Triple Pleasure Gift Set – $89.99 $45.00 – 50% off with SMART coupon!

I personally think this is a fantastic deal! Three toys for under $50?! I also find them to be super cute, if aesthetics matter to you in terms of toy choices. The set contains three separate bullet vibrators with different tips for a variety of sensation. I myself am a bullet evangelist and I’m tempted to grab these for myself.

A trio of bullet vibrators in different pastel colors. There's a pastel green vibrator with rabbit ears, a pastel purple with a rounded tip, and a pastel blue with an angled and textured tip.

Dolce Thumping G-Spot Vibrator – $99.99 $50.00 – 50% off with SMART coupon!

I’m really digging the design and color palette of this one. This vibe has two distinct sensations. One is vibration and the other is a thumping mode; both have ten different patterns each. Please note that this is only compatible with water-based lubricants.

A pink vibrator, kind of shaped like a Q. The middle is hollow and rimmed in gold.

Maia Shroomie Mini Wand Massager – $59.99 $30.00 – 50% with SMART Coupon

For all you readers who love a bit of whimsy, check out this mushroom-inspired vibrator! This one boasts 15 stimulation modes and is rechargeable. I honestly hate messing around with batteries, as inevitably things will die mid-use/ Nothing kills the mood quite like hunting for AAAs in your junk drawer or figuring out which remote to steal them from.

A small vibrator shaped like a mushroom with a white base and red top.

Slay Amaze Me Mini Rabbit Vibrator – $39.99 $20.00 – 50% off with SMART coupon!

Honestly, I could do a whole post on cute toys that look like other things. (Should I?) This rechargeable vibrator can run up to 90 minutes on a single charge, which is hella impressive. Plus, it’s waterproof and comes with a variety of vibration settings.

A teal vibrator in the shape of a rabbit. The bottom is rounded (like a weeble wooble) and is gold.

Thank you to Adam and Eve for the coupon, and for sponsoring this post!

Don’t forget – AdamandEve.com is offering Smart Bitches readers 50% off a single item plus free standard shipping in the US and Canada with code SMART. Please note: certain exclusions apply, but the coupon covers most of the store.

I hope you’re able to do something special for yourself this summer! If you have other recommendations from Adam & Eve, please leave them in the comments below.

A Letter to the Luminous Deep

RECOMMENDED: A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvia Cathrall is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Elyse read this one and gave it an A:

If you are looking for a cozy fantasy read with excellent romance and worldbuilding, I highly recommend Letters to the Luminous Deep.

A charming fantasy set in an underwater world with magical academia and a heartwarming penpal romance, perfect for fans of A Marvellous Light, Emily Wilde’s Encylopaedia of Faeries and The House in the Cerulean Sea.

“An underwater treasure-chest to be slowly unpacked, full of things I adore: nosy and loving families, epistolary romance, gorgeous worldbuilding, and anxious scholars doing their best to meet the world with kindness and curiosity.” —Freya Marske, author of A Marvellous Light

A beautiful discovery outside the window of her underwater home prompts the reclusive E. to begin a correspondence with renowned scholar Henerey Clel. The letters they share are filled with passion, at first for their mutual interests, and then, inevitably, for each other.

Together, they uncover a mystery from the unknown depths, destined to transform the underwater world they both equally fear and love. But by no mere coincidence, a seaquake destroys E.’s home, and she and Henerey vanish.

A year later, E.’s sister Sophy, and Henerey’s brother Vyerin, are left to solve the mystery, piecing together the letters, sketches and field notes left behind—and learn what their siblings’ disappearance might mean for life as they know it.

Inspired, immersive, and full of heart, this charming epistolary tale is an adventure into the depths of a magical sea and the limits of the imagination from a marvelous debut voice.

Swordcrossed

Swordcrossed by Freya Marske is $2.99! Many of us were very excited for this release. Sarah also had Marske on the podcast to talk about it.

High heat. Low stakes. Sharp steel.

The cozy, low stakes of Legends & Lattes meets the scorching bodyguard fantasy of Jennifer L. Armentrout’s From Blood and Ash in this enemies-to-lovers romance where, yes, the swords do cross.

A LitHub most anticipated book of 2024

Mattinesh Jay, dutiful heir to his struggling family business, needs to hire an experienced swordsman to serve as best man for his arranged marriage. Sword-challenge at the ceremony could destroy all hope of restoring his family’s wealth, something that Matti has been trying—and failing—to do for the past ten years.

What he can afford, unfortunately, is part-time con artist and full-time charming menace Luca Piere.

Luca, for his part, is trying to reinvent himself in a new city. All he wants to do is make some easy money and try to forget the crime he committed in his hometown. He didn’t plan on being blackmailed into giving sword lessons to a chronically responsible—and inconveniently handsome—wool merchant like Matti.

However, neither Matti’s business troubles nor Luca himself are quite what they seem. As the days count down to Matti’s wedding, the two of them become entangled in the intrigue and sabotage that have brought Matti’s house to the brink of ruin. And when Luca’s secrets threaten to drive a blade through their growing alliance, both Matti and Luca will have to answer the how many lies are you prepared to strip away, when the truth could mean losing everything you want?

“There’s nothing in fantasy or queer romance that Marske can’t do.”—Sarah Rees Brennan

Sig’s dream girl is his future stepsister.

Though the pair is now wary of being involved romantically, Chloe, a sheltered harp prodigy, yearns to escape her controlling mother. Sig promises to teach her the ins and outs of independence in Boston—but not inside his bedroom. This HaBO is from Britain, who wants to find this romance:

I was hoping you could maybe help me find the title of this book I’ve read a couple of years ago.

I don’t remember much, but I remember the heroine working in social media or something like that and she wants to create a platform/app for women and their body sizes. Heroine meets the hero (who I believe plays sports. I don’t remember if it was hockey or boxing or something else) at dinner with her friend who is also her partner for this platform/app. Somebody takes a photo of the heroine and hero standing close to each other, making everyone assuming they’re dating. They enter a fake dating arrangement, but later on the heroine ends the arrangement when she see photos of the hero with another woman taken during the hero’s night out celebrating the team’s win. It turns out the other woman is a friend of the hero and he has been helping this woman by pretending to her boyfriend because she gets harassed a lot by men since her body developed early. That’s all I can remember. I think it was an indie book so maybe it’s not that known.

Any lead would be appreciated! I’ve been hunting this for a while now.

Let’s HaBO!

Welcome back!

It’s another short and sweet release week for us! However, the last week of April promises to be much beefier.

Is there anything you’re excited for this week? Let us know in the comments!

Anywhere You Go

Anywhere You Go by Bridget Morrissey

Author: Bridget Morrissey
Released: April 22, 2025 by Berkley
Genre: , ,

A small-town waitress and a big-city Broadway press agent swap homes to escape the messiness of their personal lives, only to find new purpose—and new love.

Tatum Ward and Eleanor Chapman lead totally opposite lives. Tatum’s never left her Midwestern hometown. She resides in a quaint guest cottage on her parents’ property while working part-time as a waitress, where she spends most shifts ignoring her feelings for a beautiful regular named June. Eleanor dedicates every waking hour to her high-profile press career, sacrificing personal relationships for professional success, save for the occasional hookup to fight off her loneliness. When both women’s lives unexpectedly blow up at the exact same time, they each need an escape, and fast.

In Tatum’s hometown, Eleanor expects a quiet hideaway where she can recharge. Instead she gets wrapped up in the family drama that Tatum left town to avoid, pulled in by Tatum’s charismatic older sibling, Carson, who charms Eleanor at every turn. Tatum ends up in Eleanor’s New York high-rise apartment with June. One week together in the big city might make it impossible for Tatum to avoid not just her true feelings for June, but her real dreams for her life.

Amid a friendship with a reclusive Hollywood actress and a complicated family reunion, Tatum and Eleanor each discover much more than they bargained for away from home. Their house swap won’t last forever, but it might be just long enough for both women to surrender their defenses and finally fight for the life—and love—they deserve.

Sarah: Aside from having one of the most beautiful covers, I have a quiet weakness for house-swap romances.

Bold Moves

Bold Moves by Emma Barry

Author: Emma Barry
Released: April 22, 2025 by Montlake
Genre: ,

From the author of Bad Reputation comes a smart and sexy second-chance romance, where exes reunite to adapt a memoir, only to discover that after a decade apart, they might finally be ready for more.

Working with your ex isn’t that bad an idea—not with artistic integrity on the line. Jaime Croft is determined to prove his directorial range, and Scarlett Arbuthnot’s biography is the perfect project. He once thought Scarlett was his perfect match too, but it’s been seventeen years. Surely he’s over it by now.

Or maybe not.

Scarlett is a grand master taking the chess world by storm. If she can handle that pressure, she can handle Jaime Croft. Even if that means working together in close quarters…and constant reminders of how she broke his heart. She didn’t do it without reason, but if he knew the details, he would despise her even more.

As Jaime and Scarlett pore over her memoir, they unlock their own memories, and old feelings rise to the surface. But giving in means abandoning the walls they’ve built to protect themselves, and that’s a move neither one seems ready to make.

Emma Barry’s books have been recommended before and this one features a grand master chess player as the heroine!

Great Big Beautiful Life

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry

Author: Emily Henry
Released: April 22, 2025 by Berkley
Genre: ,

Two writers compete for the chance to tell the larger-than-life story of a woman with more than a couple of plot twists up her sleeve in this dazzling and sweeping new novel from Emily Henry.

Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

When Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person who’ll tell her story, there are three things keeping Alice’s head in the game.

One: Alice genuinely likes people, which means people usually like Alice—and she has a whole month to win the legendary woman over.

Two: She’s ready for this job and the chance to impress her perennially unimpressed family with a Serious Publication.

Three: Hayden Anderson, who should have no reason to be concerned about losing this book, is glowering at her in a shaken-to-the core way that suggests he sees her as competition.

But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room.

And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad…depending on who’s telling it.

Lara: I will read anything Emily Henry writes, even though it always makes me cry.

Elyse: I ordered the Afterlight special edition of this and I can’t wait to read it.

Network Effect

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Network Effect by Martha Wells is $2.99! This is the first full-length Murderbot novel, which Sarah reviewed. The next book, Fugitive Telemetry, is also on sale. Sarah also has these glowing things to say:

I cannot encourage you more vociferously to grab this on sale, and read the series (possibly more than once). It, no exaggeration, got me through 2020, it is the series I find comfort in, and I cannot recommend it with more affection. Please do not miss out on this sale.

You know that feeling when you’re at work, and you’ve had enough of people, and then the boss walks in with yet another job that needs to be done right this second or the world will end, but all you want to do is go home and binge your favorite shows? And you’re a sentient murder machine programmed for destruction? Congratulations, you’re Murderbot.

I’m usually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are.

When Murderbot’s human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action.

Drastic action it is, then.

The Monsters We Defy

RECOMMENDED: The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Sarah read this one and gave it a B:

I liked the painstaking and careful character development of the first half more than the zoomy-zoom plot of the second half, but the foundation of historical fiction and incredible detail coupled with folk magic, ghosts, and negotiating with spirits made this an exceptionally fun, absorbing, and thoughtful story.

A woman able to communicate with spirits must assemble a ragtag crew to pull off a daring heist to save her community in this timely and dazzling historical fantasy that weaves together African American folk magic, history, and romance.

Washington D. C., 1925

Clara Johnson talks to spirits, a gift that saved her during her darkest moments in a Washington D. C. jail. Now a curse that’s left her indebted to the cunning spirit world. So, when the Empress, the powerful spirit who holds her debt, offers her an opportunity to gain her freedom, a desperate Clara seizes the chance. The task: steal a magical ring from the wealthiest woman in the District.

Clara can’t pull off this daring heist alone. She’ll need help from an unlikely team, from a jazz musician capable of hypnotizing with a melody to an aging vaudeville actor who can change his face, to pull off the impossible. But as they encounter increasingly difficult obstacles, a dangerous spirit interferes at every turn. Conflict in the spirit world is leaking into the human one and along D.C’.s legendary Black Broadway, a mystery unfolds—one that not only has repercussions for Clara but all of the city’s residents.

You, with a View

You, with a View by Jessice Joyce is $1.99! This was previously mentioned on Hide Your Wallet and was recommended as part of my Smart Bitches After Dark quarterly recommendations that I offer to subscribers. Social media and road trip elements play a large part of this romance.

Two high school enemies must reunite for a road trip inspired by their grandparents’ broken engagement in this electric debut romance.

Noelle Shepard is unemployed, living with her parents, and grieving the loss of her beloved grandmother when she discovers decades-old photos of Gram and a smitten man, tucked alongside a love letter. She creates a TikTok to search for the mystery man, which goes viral, and she’s shocked when his grandson responds—a man who happens to be her high school nemesis, Theo Spencer.

Noelle refuses to let Theo’s annoying accomplishments in adulthood—or his sexy smirk—stand in the way of meeting his grandfather and unlocking the secrets he knew about her gram as a young woman. When she learns that their plans to elope were thwarted, Noelle decides to take the honeymoon road trip they planned but never got to carry out. There’s a catch, though: Paul, Theo’s grandfather, asks to come with her, and he insists that Theo join them.

It’ll be a miracle if they make it through the trip without Noelle throwing Theo out of the moving car—or the bed they end up sharing. As the miles tick by, the tension simmers hotter between them…until she discovers that Theo’s hiding a secret that could cause their tenuous relationship to end before it can restart.

All’s Fair in Love and War

All’s Fair in Love and War by Virginia Heath is $2.99 and a KDD! This is book one in the Miss Prentice’s Protegees series. Have you read this one?

A new Regency romp of a series, about governess who believes in cultivating joy in her charges, clashes with the children’s uncle who hired her, only to find herself falling in love.

When the flighty older sister of former naval captain, Henry Kincaid, decides on a whim to accompany her explorer husband on an expedition to Egypt, he finds himself unwittingly left in the lurch with her three unruly children and her giant, mad dog. With no clue how to manage the little rascals, a busy career at the Admiralty that requires all of his attention, and no idea when his sister is coming back, Harry has to hire an emergency governess to ensure that everything in his ordered house continues to run shipshape. In desperation, he goes to Miss Prentice’s School for Girls prepared to pay whatever it takes to get a governess quick sharp to bring order to the chaos.

Thanks to her miserable, strict upbringing, fledgling governess Georgina Rowe does not subscribe to the ethos that children should be seen and not heard. She believes childhood should be everything that hers wasn’t, filled with laughter, adventure, and discovery. Thankfully, the three Pendleton children she has been tasked with looking after are already delightfully bohemian and instantly embrace her unconventional educational ethos. Their staid, stickler-for-the-rules uncle, however, is another matter entirely…

Great Big Beautiful Life

by Emily Henry
April 22, 2025 · Berkley

TW/CW

CW: So many tragic events are described in this book. They all happen historically but in the telling, their force is felt. These include multiple deaths, estrangements, adoptions and a cult. It’s intense.

Ed.note: I typically call these “grief books” and Lara confirms that’s an apt description.

I dithered for a week before starting this book. I had it in my possession, but couldn’t get past the first page. I’m not sure if this is unique to me, but when I’m really looking forward to something, it’s very difficult for me to start it. Then, one morning I bit the bullet and pushed through to page two. From there, I tore through the book, snatching reading time wherever I could until I finished it this evening.

Afterward, I think I felt every emotion there is to feel.

Alice and Hayden are writers who are in a small town in coastal Georgia to try out for the post of being Margaret Ives’ biographer. Margaret Ives now lives a reclusive life under a different name and works as a mosaic artist in said coastal town. She’s in her 80s and has lived an incredibly big life, much of it played out in the tabloids. She comes from a very wealthy media mogul family and she quickly became the ‘Tabloid Princess’. Now she is ready to tell her story, her way.

Margaret’s story takes up a big chunk of the book and it is an incredibly tragic one. A romance novel promises only a HEA for our main couple. There’s no promise for a HEA for her so I felt I was risking my heart a bit reading this book. The suffering in Margaret’s life made it tough going for me. I was very worried about what would happen to Margaret at the end. If, like me, you can only go through emotional turmoil in a book if you know that things will at least kind of work out, then click below to see whether it’s a HEA or not for Margaret.

Ending spoiler, but vague about the particulars

It’s sort of an HEA for Margaret, albeit with no romance involved. Not as happy as our main couple, but at least not more tragedy.

Alice focuses on celebrity profiles mostly and other lighter pieces. This would be her first major biography, but she’s passionate about telling it because her dad (who passes away before the book begins) was curious about Margaret’s story. Losing her dad is not the only tragic event of Alice’s life. Her sister had health issues when she was younger and that deeply impacted Alice’s life. There’s also some baggage with her mom. So Alice has a lot going on. All of this is unpacked gradually for the reader, but the bare bones (like I’ve given you here) emerge early on in the book.

At the very start of the book, though, Alice is SUNSHINE PERSONIFIED and at the exact moment I had the thought, ‘She is irritating’, the backstory begins to be revealed and the depth to her personality emerges.

If Alice is sunshine, then Hayden is the grump (although these are such fully fleshed out characters that it feels odd to reduce them to a trope). He’s a taciturn journalist who started out writing about music and then won a Pulitzer when he wrote a biography about someone just as they were losing their memories to dementia. He is initially quite cold with Alice, but that changes, almost against his will.

It’s not that Alice charms him or that he warms up. It’s a bit of both, but it’s also more than that. There is a magnetism between these two that compels them into each other’s path. The repartee had me smiling at my Kindle like a goofball. There are some moments of humour too! These combine to really lift the book into something that’s readable for someone like me who takes ages to recover from books describing tragedies.

Alice and Hayden gradually fall in love and it’s phenomenal to read. The depth, the nuance, the insight. I felt like I knew these people as well as I know my friends. They’re thrown together initially because the first meeting they have with Margaret is a joint one where they find out the terms of this ‘audition’ to be her biographer. They’ll spend a month with Margaret (separately, on alternate days) and once the month is up, each writer must put together a proposal of how they would approach the book.

This coastal town is a tiny one, so they cross each other’s paths multiple times during that month, sometimes accidentally (neighbouring hotel rooms initially) and sometimes purposefully (Alice will sometimes seek Hayden out, wanting to be friends with him because she makes friends with everyone). The transition from competitors to friends to lovers is so gradual that I can’t identify a turning point in their relationship. There is a slow slide that as a reader I just sunk into like one would a hot bath. There is however a steady build in the tension. They both want this job and one of them is going to lose out in the end. What impact will that have on their budding relationship? As a source of conflict, it does the job.

Looking at it more broadly, the characterisation and the deftness of the writing itself is what compelled me to read this book in a day. When I would take breaks to feed my daughter or get the breast pump out, my real life would feel strange and even foreign to me, such was the extent of my immersion in this book. The end of the book was incredibly fast paced as loose ends were wrapped up and at that stage I was helpless and just went where the book told me to go.

I loved this novel. As much as it put me through the emotional wringer, the quality of the writing forced me to keep reading it and I am so very glad that I did. I think the one caution I would add is that this is more women’s fiction than it is contemporary romance. Regardless of genre specifics, Great Big Beautiful Life echoed for days after I finished it. I’m not sure I’ll ever revisit it, but I will certainly remember it.

A Novel Romance

Recently I was passing through Louisville, KY so I decided to stop at A Novel Romance, an independent romance bookstore.

Immediately when I walked in I was greeted by the resident cat, Bella, who supplied many head bonks and sniffed my shoes (which smelled like my cat).

Taylor Swift was playing on the speakers.

Tables of romance novels were before me.

This might be where I go when I die, I’m not sure.

A brown tabby with green eyes
Cat-in-Residence, Bella

Overall, A Novel Romance is a really inviting, comfortable, inclusive space with an excellent selection of books and merch.

Right away when you walk in there’s an area with these cool neon pink chairs where you can take a selfie if desired.

two hot pink chairs with the shop logo behind it

The shop is made up of several rooms dedicated to different types of romance. What struck me immediately was how wonderfully curated the collection was, and also how diverse. There is a ton of queer romance here, and plenty of titles I hadn’t seen before.

I hate how the algorithm gets to you on social media and you wind up seeing the same titles repeated (especially if they have trendy covers) and you miss out on books that don’t float to the top of that list.

It was very clear this store was stocked by people who know and love the genre.

A shelf of YA books with some face out, such as Out of Character, Rival, Crashing into You

A shelf of sports romance

I mean, their tags are on point.

The book Remnants of Filth with the tag under it reading We don't know what the author was one when they wrote this, but it wasn't anti-depressants
I laughed so hard at this.

Most of the first two rooms are divided up into varying subgenres of contemporary romance with a small area for YA and historical. There’s even a shelf where books are shelved by spice level.

Past that is another room that’s just manga. My husband immediately went here and was very excited because romance manga isn’t something that really gets stocked at our local bookstores.

A table of romance manga including The Girl I want is so Handsome, Script for Love, White Liar, and Love is an Illusion

Beyond that is another room that’s entirely dark romance. That’s not really my thing so I browsed it, but if you really like that subgenre you’d be thrilled at all the titles shelved here.

There’s also a room for writers called the “Noveling Nook,” which I think is just so cool. It’s got Bella’s cat tree back there, too, so you know he’s offering advice on manuscripts and encouraging head bonks.

A pink room with tables and chairs and noveling nook written on the wall.

They also have a small play area for kids in case you need to keep yours entertained while browsing. Bella does not offer babysitting services.

And of course, in addition to books there is also merch.

two shelves with lots of stickers on them as well as zip covers for tablets and ereaders

They had a ton of stickers and bookmarks. They also had tee shirts, e-reader and tablet cases, pins and more.

So what did I buy?

Two books and two bookmarks on a white blanket. The bookmarks are a stack of macaron, and a tile that reads READ QUEER BOOKS.

I got myself Nine Month Contract by Amy Daws and Last Resort by K Bromberg, as well as two cute magnetic bookmarks. Rich scored some manga (not pictured).

I shopped on a random Friday, but looking at their website, they have book clubs, book launches, a craft night and a writers group.

I had so much fun stopping by, but I really wish this was my local bookstore because I would be there all the time.

Have you been to A Novel Romance? Do you have a local romance bookstore?

Ed note: if you’d like to write up a book shopping trip report for your local romance bookstore, please get in touch!

The Stand-In

RECOMMENDED: The Stand-In by Lily Chu is $1.99! This is a debut contemporary romance. Elyse gave this one an A:

So we have a celebrity romance, women being friends and helping each other with their mental health, and reflections on identity and community. That’s a lot to pack into a book, but it all works and delivered by Philippa Soo’s incredibly soothing voice, it was totally my jam.

How to upend your life:

–Get fired by gross, handsy boss
–Fail to do laundry (again)
–Be mistaken for famous Chinese actress
–Fall head-first into glitzy new world

Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together.

But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema’s golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in. The catch? Gracie will have to be escorted by Sam, the most attractive—and infuriating—man Gracie’s ever met.

If it means getting the money she needs for her mother, Gracie’s in. Soon Gracie moves into a world of luxury she never knew existed. But resisting Sam, and playing the role of an elegant movie star, proves more difficult than she ever imagined—especially when she learns the real reason Fangli so desperately needs her help. In the end, all the lists in the world won’t be able to help Gracie keep up this elaborate ruse without losing herself… and her heart.

Polaris Rising

RECOMMENDED: Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik is $1.99! This is a sci-fi romance and I absolutely loved it. Be warned that it does have a bit of a pushy alpha hero. You can read my A- here:

I am so incredibly happy that this book is in the world, especially after feeling like I’ve exhausted all my sci-fi romance options. Polaris Rising is exciting. It’s funny. It’s fan-fucking-tastic. My quibbles are minor in comparison to the joyful Good Book Noises I made while reading this.

As the seventh of nine children, Ada von Hasenberg knows that her only value to House von Hasenberg is as a political pawn in an arranged marriage. But after watching two of her older sisters get auctioned off to horrible men, Ada refuses to play her part. She flees off-planet and disappears for two years.

Ada’s father, fed up with her rebellion, offers a bounty for her safe return. The universe is a big place, but mercs are everywhere, and Ada is caught. With the merc ship full, she’s forced to share a cell with Marcus Loch, the Devil of Fornax Zero. Rumor has it he murdered every commanding officer who issued orders during the Fornax Rebellion. All anyone knows for sure is that the Royal Consortium wants his head.

Ada has no trouble believing the muscled man chained in the back of her cell is a killer. But when their ship is attacked by forces from rival House Rockhurst, Ada must decide whether to trust him—because once you release the devil, you can’t put him back. And when the attack heralds the opening salvo of a much bigger war, Ada must determine where her loyalties truly lie.

Kilt Trip

Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley is $1.99! This is a standalone contemporary romance with a heroine who works as a travel consultant. Have any of you read this one?

Ready or Scot…

Globetrotter Addie Macrae always follows her wanderlust. As a travel consultant, she jet sets around the world—anywhere but Scotland. But when she’s sent on assignment to help a struggling family-run tour company in the Highlands—and save her own job—Addie packs away her emotional baggage and turns on the professional charm.

Rugged as the land he loves, Logan Sutherland’s greatest joy is sharing the beauty of Scotland’s hidden gems…even if it means a wee bit of red ink on the company’s bottom line. The last thing Logan wants is some American “expert” pushing tourist traps and perpetuating myths about the Loch Ness Monster—especially when Addie never leaves her desk to experience the country for herself.

As they wage an office war, Logan discovers Addie’s secret connection to Scotland: a handful of faded Polaroids of her late mother. Hoping for a truce, he creates a private tour to the places in the pictures to help Addie find closure and appreciate the enchantment in less-traveled destinations, never expecting the off-limits attraction sparking between them. But Addie’s contract is almost up, and magic won’t pay the bills. They can’t afford distractions, but how can Addie do her job if she hasn’t explored all Scotland—and Logan—have to offer?

Smart Podcast Trashy Books Romantic Times RewindThe ads and features from the July 2000 issue of Romantic Times are a treasure trove of wtfery! It’s PEAK stepback era.

Readers have been introduced to Half.com for selling their old books, and they are very excited about it – to say nothing of People.com and EW.com.

We get a peek into the Romantic Times and Lady Barrow BookLover Tours – the prices made me very envious.

We also spend some time talking about Monica Jackson, who died in 2012, and is part of the reason why we started addressing the racism in romance many, many years ago.

Seriously, the visual aids are a feast this week.

Here are the books we discuss in this podcast:

We’ve got links. SO many links.

Monica Jackson said:

It’s exciting when a writer gets The Call from an editor. In many ways the call is only the beginning of an angsty rollercoaster for any novelist. But if you’re a black, you have a special ride reserved just for you.

Writing romance while black means you get a sub-genre of your very own – no matter what the content of your novel. Your special niche is already measured and the boundaries are set on your readership. Your marketing will likely be different than the white author in your chapter, even where your books are shelved in some bookstores. If you decided to attend book signings and other events with your white colleagues, the difference of your reception and audience will be thrown into stark relief.

Because since you’re black, you’re a romance writer that the majority of romance readers will never read. Your readership is defined and limited to only black romance readers by a variety of circumstances outside your control, so your opportunities are far smaller than any white romance writer from the moment you were published, regardless of your talent and determination.

Smart Podcast Trashy Books Romantic Times RewindIn this week’s podcast episode, we’re looking at the glorious  ads and features for the July 2000 issue of RT Magazine.

Thank you to Mari for this issue!

You can also find all the RTRW content at our category page for Romantic Times Rewind.

If you want to listen and follow along with this entry, we have more detail in the audio, but you can click play and listen and read and absorb all the visual goodness:

This month’s cover is for Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest, which is not a great book cover. Amanda and I degree the color palate is “depression.”

Romantic Times July 2000. The cover is a pencil and ink illustration of Daughter of the Forest, which is mostly grey scale and some amber, with a woman in a grey gown holding her hands up to the side with her eyes closed

There are also a bunch of pages missing from this issue – oops! We’ll have to go to Portobello Road for the missing pages, right?

Eglantine Price from Bedknobs and Broomsticks riding a flying broom, wearing a WWII helmet, and holding a sword aloft as she flies off to fight Nazis

This was an era of stepbacks and incredible cover art. Get ready!

A very supportive sleeveless top is in order for this scene:

Night Raven - a man with shoulder length wavy hair and no shirt and some blue beaded necklaces with a blonde woman in front on horseback with a very buxom décolletage and the horse is staring right at the reader.

The ad has the full illustration where the horse is looking RIGHT AT YOU.

The full ad has the entire illustration where the horse is staring right at the reader

Highland Lovesong also has pretty impressive cover art:

John DeSalvo and a truly impressive mullet nearly to his shoulder blades is shirtless of course in a kilt and is looking down at a woman with red hair. he seems to be peeling the gown off her shoulders. Behind them are some rocks and water and a castle

But the ad has the entire oil painting – where they appear to have mirrored the mountains on the top left there?

The full art includes the couple about to kiss and behind her to the left is a lake, some purple flowers, the back of her gown, aand a mountain that appears to have been mirrored from the middle so the left and right are identical

I love cover art, and I especially love the whole painting where there’s just nature and stuff to make room for the cover copy.

Ahem. LOOK AT THIS WATCH!!!!!!!

A black and white image of a Swatch romance novel themed watch. The text reads RTON THE Romance Watch! It's about time! Romance fans can wile away their reading hours in style and show off their favorite hobby with this rare collectible Swatch Watch named "Tormented Souls." Originally released in the United States as part of a Valentine's Day Swatch collection in 1997, RT heard the watch recently surfaced in Australia, and with a little sleuthing, found a way for romance fans to get their verv own torrid timepiece! Altivo Creative Timepieces in Los Angeles is offering the watch for $40 plus s/h. To order, please call (323) 933-1460 or see their catalog at www.altivo.com. For the bargain shoppers out there, keep an eye on eBay.com or the other online auction sites. You never know what you might find on the romance watch!

YOU CAN GET ONE! The Romance Swatch! Tormented Souls is written in script on the face, and the top band is a couple rmbacing in mostly shades of purple, orange, and yellow, and the words read when passion is the only choice the lower band is a woman in an off the shoulder white dress and long wavy hair and the text reads the new romantic novel by - and the last name is cut off

There are a few on eBay for between $40 and $60!

Remember how Swatch was The Coolest? I had rubber screen protector bands that I’d twist over the watch face. And the plastic watchband became the most disgusting thing, and there were so many to choose from?

I cannot believe I didn’t know this existed until now.

Speaking of cannot believe: did you know Harlequin once gave away a brand new VW Bug in a contest in which folks had to write a 200 words or less short story?

Two black and white pics of a group of people holding books on and over a VW Bug, and a picture of a person giving the keys to the winner The text reads It called for contestants to submit a 200-words or less short story with the romantic comedy theme, indicative of the Duets format, featuring a new Volkswagen Beetle. The grand prize? A shiny new 2000 yellow Volkswagen Beetle! Harlequin received over 1500 entries and the lucky winner is Kate Weichelt, a self-emploved resident of St. Catharine's, Ont. The winning story, titled "The Wedding Bug," was selected based on its originality wit and charm. Kate is a longtime romance reader and an aspiring writer who happened to discover the contest while surfing through the Harlequin site. In addition to winning the sleek new version of the popular 1970s car, Kate's story was published in the back of the August Harlequin Duets editions.

A whole car! For a 200 word short story! To celebrate the NEWLY DESIGNED WEBSITE.

I am telling you, the 2000s were a wild time.

There was a lot of travel talk in this issue, with Kathryn Falk promoting Lady Barrow Tours, with trips to Italy

Lady Barrow Tours include New Year's Eve in Iceland, two trips to Italy that cost 2000-2200, and a 10 night trip to England with a special event celebrating Barbara Cartland's 100th

Look at the prices – $2000 – $2200 for 10/11 night trips?!

Do you recognize this author?

A black and white photo of Patricia Cabot, aka Meg Cabot. She's wearing a turtleneck sweater and has long shoulder length wavy hair

That’s Meg Cabot!

Then we got to a multi-page spread about Steve Sandalis, aka The Topaz Man, featuring a full page of list of titles featuring Steve on the cover, with a lot of incredible snapshots.

An illustration from Cassie Edwards' Wild Abandon, featuring a white woman in an off the shoulder gown kneeling in front of Steve, who is entirely nude. He has no pants on.

To quote Amanda, “He has no pants on!”

The collections of covers at the bottom of this multi page spread are incredible.

Some stepback illlustration of shirtless Steve, pllus Silver Deceptions by Deborah Martins, another stepback of Steve in a fur diaper bikini bottom, Rebel Wind b Leeanne Gryson, and Dreamspun Christmas The Sky Pirate - big puffy white shirt and long hair! Touch the Night with him standing shirtless and extending his hand to the reader. A stepback of naked Steve in what looks like fire water, like the water is orange and on fire, another stepback of him embracing a woman in some water naked from the back, and Wild Hawk - which features Steve shirtless in jeans. Five more covers including a stepback, with Steve wearing no shirts. In one he's wearing an eyepatch.

This was the era of the stepback, so let’s take a closer look at two of them.

The stepback image of Heather Graham's Lord of the Wolves. He's got long blond hair, he's mostly naked with fur boots and a fur diaper with a wide belt. Over his shoulder is a circle with a woman who looks annoyed.

That is the stepback for Lord of the Wolves by Heather Graham. The cover is rather understated given what’s inside:

Lord of the Wolves in gold with the author name in gold against. red filigree background, with an image of a gold wolf statue with gems in its back

It’s just…look at that art. Covers and stepbacks do not look like this any more.

a larger version of the fur diaper stepback

And then there’s this one, where they appear to be bathing in fire?

Here’s a larger pic from the eBay listing:

Steve Sandalis is very naked with long hair rinsing his forearm in some water. There's a red haired woman, also naked, behind him, and the water and backdrop looks like they are bathing in a volcano. EVERYTHING is orange and red

PLEASE DO NOT BATHE NAKED IN THE VOLCANO. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION.

The cover is a foil image of a white lily, and this fire bathing naked shiny duo is behind the cover.

Also – he is very smooth down there, if you know what I mean, and I think that you do.

Sometimes the stepback was in the ad!

Candice Proctor's The Last Knight.has a lute and some flowers on the cover, but behind the book cover is the stepback - John DeSalvo holding a sword, with the lute behind him, and a MULLET

I give that mullet an 8 out of 10.

When the page from Love Spell is in black and white, of course I go hunt down the covers.

The Black Rose by Jan Zimlich features a white muscular man who looks kind of like Ricky Martin reclining on dark silver sating sheets and holding a black rose

Attention, fans of Elyse’s Bachelor and Bachelorette recaps: THAT is the ROSE GOD, right?!

And The Wild Swans is an incredible cover:

A photograph of a blonde woman with curly hair wearing a deep v neck purple shiny gown with a swan in the background. There's pink and teal and yellow and gold and it's very opulent

Look at that. You’d never know it was that incredible in black and white.

This ad gave us a lot to discuss:

an illustration of a man with a very lumpy face holding a gun? and it says INCA IS COMING August 2000 for morgan's mercenaries heart of the warrior by Lindsay mckenna

If that’s Inca, can he stay away? Because I’m very creeped out. I’d rather he not come.

This event at the RT Convention sounds truly unhinged and I am SO sorry I missed it:

An ad for the first party at RT Convention that reads THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9 Romance Carnivale, Hospitality Suites & Awards Ceremony 10 AM -5 рм (Austin Ballroom THE CARNIVALE BEGINS Author Promotions • Strolling English Minstrels, Bagpiper, & Celtic Harpists Author Tête-à-Têtes • Pageant Parade & Box Lunch Raffle • TRC/Soaps Booth Publishers Goody Bags • Surprise Give-Aways Past Life Regression Sessions • Silent Auction Precious Gems • Cover Model Reunion Tarot Cards and Psychie Readings • Book Drawings Author Door Prizes • Swing Lessons

LOOK at all the stuff going on in this one day event! Strolling minstrels! Swing lessons! Tarot card and past life regression sessions!

Wow, we missed a party.

There’s also an appearance from EXTREME TROY!

A shirtless and shiny extreme troy wearing leather pants and a gold belt and chain smiling as he stands on a rock with some violently red clouds behind him.

I’m now regularly sending this image to Amanda with different captions.

So, folks, those are the Ads & Features from July 2000!

Remember, if you join the Patreon, you’ll get access to the entire issue as a PDF.

Do you miss stepbacks? Ebulliently colorful cover art? Did you have the Romance Swatch?!

What do you think? Do you remember any of these books?

Consort of Fire

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha is $1.99! This is book one in Bound to Fire and Steel fantasy romance series. Book two is also on sale. Have you read either book? What did you think?

From cult-favorite writing duo Kit Rocha comes a fiery novel set in a lush fantasy world brimming with ancient magic, dangerous secrets, and erotic connections.

For three thousand years, an ancient dragon god has protected the borders of the Sheltered Lands. In return, he makes only one demand: every one hundred years, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as his consort…for as long as they can survive.

Sachielle of House Roquebarre is the thirty-first consort to be sacrificed to the monster who guards the mountain passes. She is young, beautiful—and she has three secrets.

First: she’s a disposable orphan trained in seduction.

Second: her handmaid, Zanya, is an assassin and the only person she has ever loved.

Third—and most dangerous: she’s cursed. Sachi and Zanya have five weeks to murder the Dragon in his bed. If they fail, the mortal king’s curse will steal not just Sachi’s life, but her very soul.

The Dragon has only one secret: he is nothing like what they have been told. And he will do whatever it takes to possess them both.

First Comes Scandal

First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn is $1.99! This is labeled as a Bridgerton prequel and Kiki gave it a B:

In the stress of the world right now, there is something extra reassuring in a book that, to put it plainly, isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. First Comes Scandal never makes you wonder if they’ll end up together (although I LOVE that kind of angst at the right time), and it doesn’t make the characters, or the reader, work too hard for the happily ever after. And honestly? Thank god.

She was given two choices…

Georgiana Bridgerton isn’t against the idea of marriage. She’d just thought she’d have some say in the matter. But with her reputation hanging by a thread after she’s abducted for her dowry, Georgie is given two options: live out her life as a spinster or marry the rogue who has ruined her life.

Enter Option #3

As the fourth son of an earl, Nicholas Rokesby is prepared to chart his own course. He has a life in Edinburgh, where he’s close to completing his medical studies, and he has no time—or interest—to find a wife. But when he discovers that Georgie Bridgerton—his literal girl-next-door—is facing ruin, he knows what he must do.

A Marriage of Convenience

It might not have been the most romantic of proposals, but Nicholas never thought she’d say no. Georgie doesn’t want to be anyone’s sacrifice, and besides, they could never think of each other as anything more than childhood friends… or could they?

But as they embark upon their unorthodox courtship, they discover a new twist to the age-old rhyme. First comes scandal, then comes marriage. But after that comes love…

But when she is poisoned, Liyen’s grandfather steals an enchanted lotus to save her life. Enraged at his betrayal, the immortal queen commands the powerful God of War to attack Tianxia.

Upon her grandfather’s death, Liyen ascends a precarious throne, vowing to end her kingdom’s obligation to the immortals. As they are drawn together, a treacherous attraction ignites between them—one she has to resist, to not endanger all she is fighting for.

Song of the Forever Rains

Song of the Forever Rains by E.J. Mellow is $2.49! This one was published by Amazon, so it’s only available there. On Goodreads, there does seem to be some confusion on whether this falls into adult romance or young adult. Others say it splits the difference at new adult. You can grab all three books in the series for less than $10 right now!

From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction.

The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadlior. Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound. There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses.

Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters. When it’s discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke. Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke’s potential bride. But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan’s rightful heir. Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke. Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan—and themselves.

Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest. Dare to listen?

Historical romance author Madeline Hunter passed away earlier this week from cancer.

Her publisher, Kensington, made an official announcement on their Instagram.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kensington Books (@kensingtonbooks)

Readers and authors are sharing their favorite Hunter historicals across social media.

A screenshot from Manda Collins' Threads account. Her thread says I just saw on Facebook that one of my of favorite historical romance authors of all time has died. I had the privilege of of meeting Madeline Hunter in her signing line at RWA years before I'd even written a book. Y'all I went full fan girl on the poor woman. Stammered, babbled. Got my signed book then ran away.

A screenshot from author Manda Collins Threads account. It says My favorite of her books is THE CHARMER. With a hero who's a fixer for the crown, a heroine who's a Duchess in her own right, and a parade of emotional support animals that includes a spider monkey and an ocelot, it's delicious. And, just like all of her books there's a mystery. Years after that disastrous first meeting I was lucky enough to receive a cover quote from the writer who showed me how to combine my two favorite genres in one. Thank you for everything, Ms. Hunter. You'll be missed.

Our condolences go to her family and her friends, everyone else who had the fortune to know Hunter, and to those who have been affected by her writing. When an author passes, readers often reflect on what their work has meant to them. It’s a reminder how books attract a community of passionate people.

Is there a favorite Madeline Hunter book on your bookshelf? Do you have any fond memories of meeting her at events and conferences?

Swordheart

by T. Kingfisher
November 27, 2018 · Red Wombat Studio
Contemporary RomanceRomance

Swordheart was originally published in 2018. Luckily for me, Tor is republishing it with a gorgeous cover and pretty green edges, so I have an excuse to review it. I was charmed by the characters and the dialogue, but less so by the fact that the book Would. Not. End. for the longest time.

The book opens with Halla, our heroine, a 36-year-old, slightly stout widow, being locked in a room by her relatives, who want to force her into marriage with a man who Halla detests. It’s an inheritance thing. Her uncle (whose house she is locked in) was a collector of antiquities, so when Halla decides to end it all, she spots an old sword and considers how best to fall upon it (it’s harder than it sounds, apparently).

When she pulls the sword free of the scabbard, a man appears. His name is Sarkis, and he is trapped in the sword for all eternity and must serve whomever draws it. There was a magical curse long ago, it’s a whole thing. So now he is pledged to Halla’s service and rather confused as to how to help her solve the inheritance drama without killing all of her relatives (she’s against it).

Swordheart has a strong sense of place and exists in a clearly carefully built world, but the plot is fairly lightweight.

Will Halla get her inheritance back?

Will she have to marry that creepy guy with clammy hands?

Will Sarkis resolve his whole sword problem in some kind of satisfactory way?

Will Halla and Sarkis stop staring at each other and have sex already?

As a reader who has read T. Kingfisher’s horror novels, I’m aware that she is fully capable of wreaking havoc on her characters, but this book does not have a horror vibe. It is more of a “Everything will be fine, luv, why don’t you sit down and have a cuppa” vibe. This is not, overall, a high-stress or high-stakes book, despite having some stressful and violent scenes. I was never in doubt of a happy outcome.

What makes this book delightful is the attention to fine characterization and dry, witty dialogue. Halla, Sarkis, and their companions Zale and Brindle are finely realized and developed characters who are given time and space to develop their relationships with each other. Every new plot development shines because of the authenticity that the characters bring to each challenge. Every conversation is a delight.

I especially enjoyed the attention paid to Halla’s survival tactic of befuddling her enemies by appearing to be foolish and/or ‘emotional.’ This tactic is fully validated and is highly entertaining to see in action. Indeed, for every time that Sarkis is forced to save the day through violence, there are many more in which Halla and Zale accomplish goals and avoid confrontation by using their wits. It’s not just fun to read, it’s also gratifying to see how a woman with very little resources is able to weaponize her opponents’ assumptions. Halla isn’t the first woman to do so and won’t be the last and it’s lovely to see these kinds of tactics get some recognition.

The romance between Halla and Sarkis is lovely, but honestly I felt that Sarkis and Halla were so clearly established to be perfect for each other with their very first conversation that I never worried about them. If not for literary convention they could have been married by Chapter Three and I’d not have batted an eye. Halla’s optimism and matter-of-fact approach to the world balances nicely with Sarkis’s “kill it with fire” jaded and cynical approach to life, and he does a good job of keeping her focused and not dead. If you are looking for steamy sex, you won’t get much of it – I’d say this book is around a PG-13, maybe a soft R at one point.

This book did lose a lot of points with me for having a completely out-of-character fight towards the end. We’ve been leading up to a big secret, but honestly it’s not that terrible of a secret and it refers to something that happened centuries ago. I do not believe that Halla would be upset by this revelation. We have to waste many, many, many chapters on the repercussions of Halla’s out-of-character and illogical reaction to this secret.

For most of the book, Halla and Sarkis travel in a cart pulled by an ox. We are frequently reminded that “An ox is slow.” So is the pace of the book. I was fine with that for much of the journey. All of the characters got to know one another, romance had a chance to develop, and enough things happened along the way to keep me entertained. I regret to inform you, however, that this book has a terrible case of ending fatigue, as referenced above. Even I, patient as an ox, felt that maybe the book could have ended several chapters before it actually does.

I went into this book blind and didn’t realize that it is part of a larger series. I thought it worked fine as a stand-alone, although I can see that some additional world-building would have been useful. For T. Kingfisher completists, it sits between the Clockwork Boys Duology and the Paladin series in the world of the Temple of the White Rat. Whether you enjoy this as an audio, an ebook, or a shiny new copy with pretty edges, I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. I try not to guess at the author’s motives when writing on this site, but perhaps I can get away with it just once. I like to think that the book is too long simply because the author enjoyed the characters as much as I did and did not want to say goodbye.

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old bookThis request came from Vicki. Thanks, Vicki!

I was chatting with someone in India who is unhappy with their cricket team and remembering playing cricket as a kid. I’m wondering if there are any good cricket romances.

Sarah: I am stumped!

Amanda: Same! If any exist, they’re most certainly indie pubbed or not readily available in the US, given that Jodi McAlister’s reality TV romances were Aussie-only for a while, given that her publisher wasn’t sure about global appeal

Sarah: A cursory search has yielded a few cricket romances, such as The Love Declaration by Ritika Aastha. ( A )

And The Zoya Factor by Anuja Chauhan. ( A | BN | K )

Shana: Bad Girl Gone Wicked by Shilpa Suraj ( A ), according to Reddit.

What romances would you recommend? Let us in the comments!

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links!

It doesn’t feel like a Wednesday and time seems to be going painfully slow this week. Last night, I had a bridal dress consultation with Alysia Cole, a bridal stylist I found on Instagram. It was a wonderful half hour call and I’m eager to see her suggestions on where to shop locally and what designers might work for the style I envision. I’m especially prioritizing dresses that allow me to wear a standard bra.

If you underwent a dress hunt, how’d it go? Any advice you’d like to dispense?

This link comes from my colleague Jane (hi, Jane!). We had a great discussion about cozy fiction, what the label means, and what might be the key to successful cozy fiction. This piece is a very good representation of that convo.

From EditChief:

Here’s a card game that uses pulp magazines & novels from the 1930s and “finding your true love” as the game focus. I’ve backed this Kickstarter creator in the past so it feels like a reliable option to share.

Japanese teens have made trading cards of the older men in their local community. Everything about it is just delightful.

Lastly, let’s partake in more public library goodness.

Any Duke in a Storm

Any Duke in a Storm by Amalie Howard is $1.99! This is book four in the Daring Dukes series. The heroine is a spy trying to apprehend a duke. Have any of you read this series?

Historical romance takes to the high seas. Famed spy Lady Lisbeth Medford is on a ship bound for the West Indies, and the only thing more dangerous than her mission is the elusive Duke she’s trying to capture.

Lady Lisbeth Medford, Countess of Waterstone and famed international spy, is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. She’s determined to infiltrate a notorious smuggling ring in the West Indies while on a covert mission as a ship’s captain. But even when her identity is compromised and she’s forced to flee, the men chasing her are still hot on her heels.

The trouble in front of her, however, might be even worse. Raphael Saint, the Duc de Viel, is her ship’s new aggravating and dangerously charming sailing master, who might very well be part of the smuggling ring Lisbeth must bring to justice. But when a new deadly threat on the high seas looms, the only way out of danger is to face it…together.

The Dare and the Doctor

The Dare and the Doctor by Kate Noble is $3.99! This is the third book in the Winner Takes All historical romance series. This was also mentioned in a Hide Your Wallet post way back in 2016.

Dr. Rhys Gray and Miss Margaret Babcock are friends—strictly friends. But over the course of the year, as they exchange dozens of letters, they share personal details that put them on the path to something more. When Dr. Gray helps Margaret realize her dearest dream and she comes to his defense in the uproar that follows, it seems that their connection cannot be denied. But will their relationship stand the scruples of society and jealous intendeds, or are they destined to be only friends, and nothing more?

The perfect novel for fans of Regency Era romance, The Dare and the Doctor is a clever and passionate love story worth sharing.

The Only Purple House in Town

The Only Purple House in Town by Ann Aguirre is $1.99! This is book four in the Fix-It Witches series and is the first to breakaway from the previous cover designs in the series. We mentioned this on Hide Your Wallet in summer 2023.

Iris Collins is the messy one in her family. The “chaos bunny.” Her sisters are all wildly successful, while she can’t balance her budget for a single month. It’s no wonder she’s in debt to her roommates. When she unexpectedly inherits a house from her great aunt, her plan to turn it into a B&B fails—as most of her plans do. She winds up renting rooms like a Victorian spinster, collecting other lost souls…and not all of them are “human.”

Eli Reese grew up as the nerdy outcast in school, but he got rich designing apps. Now he’s successful by any standards. But he’s never had the same luck in finding a real community or people who understand him. Over the years, he’s never forgotten his first crush, so when he spots her at a café, he takes it as a sign. Except then he gets sucked into the Iris-verse and somehow ends up renting one of her B&B rooms. As the days pass, Eli grows enchanted by the misfit boarders staying in the house…and even more so by Iris. Could Eli have finally found a person and a place to call “home”?
