Daleks In Manhattan

I take back anything bad I may have said about this episode before I saw it.


So, the Daleks are back. And I was one of the people whining about overuse. And I am now being forced to eat my words. Damn you, show!

I think the reason that they worked so well is because they were doing something different, rather than just trying to take over the human race. They're still doing that, but with fun extras like genetic modification and pig slaves! Although, I probably would have had a better viewing experience if the hybrid hadn't been ON THE FRONT COVER OF THE RADIO TIMES. Pfft. But Daleks, awesome. I always have a bit of trouble finding them in any way scary, but I think I cracked it this episode. I kept remembering that they're these creepy little squishy things encased in these metal shells. It's an extra layer of impentetrability and impassivity, I guess, and that's the truly scary thing. You can't reason with Daleks. Also, the plunger from Martha's POV? Genuinely intimidating.

I love the Depression. I mean, I don't *love* the Depression, but it's a goldmine in terms of dramatic potential. And the episode really mined the depths, I think, with the juxtaposition of the squalour of the Hoovervilles *I feel clever for remembering them from GCSE history* and the glamour of the showgirls. Just the idea of building the Empire State Building at this time strikes me as this insane statement of ambition, or hope, or something.

Angsty!Doctor! Compassionate!Doctor! Furious!Doctor! Lord, but The Tennant is working it. And that is all I have to say about that. Ooh, apart from I LOVE him making stuff out of bits of crap.

Martha still owning it, although I wish they would tone down her crush on the Doctor *slightly*. We get it.

Ric from Holby City! Being pretty damn good, with the caring, and setting up some sort of Hooverville Code Of Honour, and the rousing fireside battle speech. I was hoping for some sort of hobo march on the sewers, though. Maybe next week, hmm?

Murray Gold! Beautiful, beautiful man. I don't care if it's loud, he own my soul because he wrote an amazing choral piece that sounded like "Duel Of The Fates".

In general: Noo Yawk accents? Ouch

Next week: Shit gets blown up. Sweet.

I love bad American accents. They amuse me. But I cannot stand bad British ones.

I completely agree with the Martha crush. We doooo getttt ittttt. I like her but just that fact annoys me. LOL.

And I liked the detail of the Empire State Building still being built.

Yep, yep, yep and down with the Radio Times this week. The Tennant is amazing- he is being given a lot of angsty material to work with lately- Rose and Gallifrey related but he never over uses anything. If he's brow furrowing there's good reason.

The Mill and Murray Gold rock my socks. This episode was amazing- next week and more angst (and cheap wine) here we come! xXx

Daleks are just not scary. I always find Dalek episodes really melodramatic, but this one was AWESOME. I loved it! Probably because their final experiment was a lot better than I expected.

Frank was ADORABLE.
