That was a bit good, wasn't it?

Ohh, Rusty. Just when you're starting to irriate me slightly you win me back over with an episode like this.

First off, the Doctor lying to Martha? Gnarly. And his description of Gallifrey was beautiful. Heartbreaking. Like, the Tennant properly acting his heart out. Emo about something other than Rose! Excellent!

Anguished wail! Fantabulous. And the Doctor got to be angry! I love it that he gets angry! Obviously, he's still crazy like a puppy some of the time, as is good and proper, but one thing I miss about Nine is that he was properly intimidating when he was angry. So more rage!

Awesome visuals, but the big reveal of the motorway was slightly less effective for having been used in all the teasers. Meh, it still looked righteous. And how cool was the crazy hatch-dangling-Doctor-dropping-up-and-down-chase of awesomeness?

Oh, Ardal O'Hanlon. You rule. Even when you're being a cat. Especially when you're being a cat. And high five! For inter-species romancing and reproduction. The kittens were cuties, especially when clambering over the Tennant on Confidential. And it's weird to see Sugar from Sugar Rush doing something other than shamelessly manipulating her lesbian best friend.

"Dont you go dying on me, you big Face!"

Giant scary space traffic crabs for the win! Seriously, The Mill are on a roll this year. And the Face of Boe and Novice Hame! Woop for continuity! And I sort of wish I hadn't been following the whole Mr Saxon saga online, because I think they're building up the mystery nicely. And I loved the use of hymns, so luverly.

Okay, now for the seemingly-obligatory I Heart Martha squeefest... Dammit, show! Aren't we still supposed to be in mourning? Why is she so awesome? Well, she's still clever (see clever logic re: vents, hiding from macra etc), which is good. And her obvious crush on the Doctor hasn't given her crazy teenage rose-tinted love goggles. Yes, she wants to go home with him (who wouldn't?), but she's also pretty aware of the imbalances in their dynamic. The line "Sometimes I think he likes me, but sometimes I just think he needs someone with him" is damn perceptive. And she's not about to let the Doctor call all the shots. The last scene of the episode, with the forcing him to deal with his shit... This is one thing that I love about Martha Vs Rose. Whereas I think Rose was a way for him to be able to forget the Time War and the genocide and whatnot, Martha is making him confront it. This is healthy. And it's damn good television.

And David and Freema both completely owned the episode. Martha's eyes welling up when everyone was singing the hymn? Ach. And I loved that the Doctor was looking slightly haggard, by the end of it all, a bit drained. Angst!

Next week: Daleks, AGAIN. Come on! Just one series without them, please!
