the hand at the level of your eyes thing is a reference to the phantom's favorite weapon...more so in the book than the musical. I can't think of the name they call it but it looks like a noose and if you have your hand at the level of your eyes then it wont tighten around your neck as much and you can potentially get free...might still hurt though....
