God, I Love Television

Okay, Doctor Who finale. Good lord.

So, the usual mess of squee and 'analysis' to follow, basically in the running order of the episode, with reveals and whatnot as my slow brain picks up on them...

I still get a kick out of seeing John Barrowman's name in the opening credits.

Ooh, ONE YEAR LATER?!!!! I deliberately didn't read spoilers for this ep, but I'd sort of assumed that she'd nip back 18 months into the past and sort it out that way.

Ooh, It's Claude from Much Ado! Stubble. I like it.
And Martha's all rebel like Ricky/Mickey! and Ben from Byker Grove...! She is 'the famous Martha Jones'! She is finally the absolute BADASS we always knew she was! She's FINALLY got a functional yet sassy hairstyle and wardrobe! She's a 'legend'!
"She's going to save the world!"

Johns Simm is beyond sexy as The Master. I think I want to be Lucy Saxon a little bit, with the raunchy kissing and the dancing... Ooh, and if anybody can Name That Tune (the one with the dance routine of awesome) I would be eternally grateful...

Further proof that the Master's mind is as filthy as my own... He's had a dirty, sweaty Jack chained up all sexual like. For a year.

"I've met shakespeare." Oh, Martha. I loves thee.
Aww, kiss flashback!

Um, it appears the Doctor's been living in some sort of creepy floor teepee.

Here we go, covert stuff! Rebellion and so forth. Oh, they've failed. Curses. Although, Jack's even grubbier now. This is a good thing.

Okay, I realise that my overwhelming Saxonlust has overshadowed my perception of the last few episodes (sorry Louise!), so I should probably just clarify that The Tennant is still rocking my socks with the acting and all that jazz. Especially with the old man make up, where so much of it is done with his eyes. Those beautiful, beautiful eyes... Anyway, up until the point where the Master fucked up the regeneration like a bastard and made the Doctor 900 (well, he was already 900, but you know what I mean), I was basically in the thrall of John Simm. Maybe it was the novelty, maybe it was just because he was so FREAKING AWESOME, I'm unclear. I'm not proud of it. Not that I'd forgotten the Doctor, but I was just so gleeful re: th Master. Anyway, I'm sorry. He may be glamourous, insane and completely sexual... but he is also warped and evil, and he hurt my Doctor. Not cool. Because now my Doctor is one foot tall and pitiful and in a birdcage.

However, Martha Jones is on hand to be brilliant: "The Doctor's still alive!" She has such complete and utter faith in him- it's one of the things she has in common with Rose, but, I dunno, it just feels like Martha's more mature about the whole thing? She's got a plan and a strategy and she's focused, whereas Rose basically just surrendered her life to the Doctor and opened the heart of the TARDIS and saved him at the expense of everything else. I absolutely love that moment for her, don't get me wrong, I just appreciate the differences. Actually, I much prefer Nine/Rose to Ten/Rose... Thoughts, anyone?

Proper action stuff with guns and running and khaki!

Finally, an explanation for UTOPIA!!! I have to admit, I was slightly pissed off with Rusty for the complete lack of focus on that in Ep11, so I have to hold my hands up. Sorry for doubting. Although, when they sliced open the Tochlofane, did anyone else think for a moment that RTD had resurrected the Daleks AGAIN? And this does put an interesting spin on Rusty's human fetish. How great are we, exactly? Maybe it's just humans in the present that are fantastic. Or maybe it's all just subjective.

Now, this whole Martha as KillerMartha ruse was pretty cool, although I did find myself doubting whether Rusty would really have a heroine who killed people in cold blood. But he didn't, so issue dodged! This isn't Torchwood, y'all.

Despite everything I said earlier, the Master looks razor fine in his dressing gown and bed hair.

Ohh, a public Martha declaration of Doctor Love. Rose comparisons? There are many. This was such a beautiful scene, she was so still and inspiring. Freema Love, people. Freema Love. If that doesn't silence that haters, I don't know what will.

Yuck, EXPLICIT COMPARISON TO ROSE! What are you doing? Are you going to have Martha's entire arc overshadowed by her?

"As if I would ask her to kill"... PACIFIST DOCTOR FTW!!!
And we've come full circle this series because everything is right back to the power of WORDS. Oh, Rusty. Hugs for you.

Ooh, a quarry! Right on.

And right in the middle of the big climactic action sequence with time reversing and everything getting fixed, Martha and the Doctor just look at each other with absolute joy and they're back on the rollercoaster and I love this partnership.

"You mean you're just gonna... keep me?" DO NOT PUT THIS IMAGE IN MY BRAIN. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SLEEP.

Ohh, Lucy. You shot John Simm. All that hot sex... Actually, I really loved this shot, the gun against the red dress was so femme fatale, it was very noir and thus awesome.

So the Master is dying in the arms of the Doctor and refusing to regenerate and the Doctor is crying.
"We're the only two left. no one else. "
And now he's full-on sobbing, and he's cradling the body of the only other Timelord left in the universe and he lets out this strangled, frustrated cry of inarticulate rage and I love this show and I love this character and I love The Tennant. And now he really is the last of the Timelords.

Or is he????? Mwahahaha.

Is it just me, or was that funeral pyre pure Return of the Jedi?

Oh, Martha. Back in the bad jacket.

Cardiff... I've been there! I've stood by that very railing in front of that red brick building! Ohh, Jack is yearning for his team! *coughIantocough*
Thae salute that he gives them reminds me that The Barrowman is not just a damn pretty face, he's fucking good at that acting lark. There's just so much pain and isncerity there.

JACK IS THE FACE OF BOE!!!!!! He lived for 5 billion years and sent messages out through the universe calling for the Doctor! He tried to warn him! He got to see Rose again!

Martha's leaving... This whole scene is played with such grace by the pair of them, it breaks my heart. And she's leaving because she loves him, and she's leaving because she has self-respect, and she's leaving because it hurts too much. God. Rose could never have done that.

THE FUCKING TITANIC?! Bring it ON, as Jack would say.

Ohh, and a Martha-centric montage at the end of Confidential. To Invincible. By Muse. Perfection.

[identity profile] buffologist.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
As always, I post about the ep and it's all capslock and swearing then I come over here and am faced with actual eloquence!!!
Word and verily to all the above!!! Especially the sex that is the Master!!!

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*blushes* Oh, you...

THE FUCKING MASTER!!!!! Oh dear lord but that man is sexual. I am a huge John Simm fan and I can honestly say I have *never* been more attracted to him than when he's being the Master. Lucky, lucky Lucy Saxon...

Just, gah! With the open mouth kissing!

[identity profile] buffologist.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I bloody love John Simm, I have to go watch Life on Mars now. I was usually in the wrong country when it was on.
I was so upset with the dying though. No more Master. (and I too almost exploded at the thought of the Doctor keeping him!!!) To be honest I would still vote Saxon!! It comes with a handy rewind button!!!

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely think the hotness of John Simm outweighs the *temporary* after-effects of voting Saxon. Even Jack was hypnotised, dammit! I'm only human.

Is he really dead though? I though so, but red nails = Lucy?

And definitely watch LoM, he's so yummy in his 70s leather jacket. Plus Philip Glenister being MANLY, if you like that sort of thing...

[identity profile] buffologist.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh!! Excellent point!! I shall hold out hope for more Master... no more John Simm as the Master though so I am still in mourning!!!
Although on the Lucy point I would love some kind of explaination as to why she went from totally fine with everything, dancing away to I am freaked out by this and shall kill you!!

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
See, Louise has got me thinking it was all a clever hoax! Like, "If this happens, shoot me, I'll pretend to die/ really die and we can do voodoo with my ashes later"

I don't want to think about it too much, though, it'll make my brain hurt like IS SNAPE EVIL?

[identity profile] buffologist.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting...
Although now you've reminded me of the whole Snape question!! Thank god we get to find out soon!!!

[identity profile] theuniqueme.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, ace reviewy type thing!

yay for badass Martha and sexy John Simm. Making Doctor Who actually brilliant since...around about March time. hoorah!

D'you reckon they're finally over Rose yet? They better had be, or its going to get really ridiculous.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh, magnificent icon! I did like the flappy shirtsleeves.

I *really* hope they let it die soon, otherwise it'll be three years later with the Doctor going "wasn't Rose great?" and RTD shoving her down our throats shouting "WASN'T SHE FANTASTIC?! SHE WAS SO HUUUMAN!"(not literally - wouldn't be practical), and another female companion waving "hello? over here?"

I'm just in mourning a little bit now, for Martha *and* the Master...

[identity profile] theuniqueme.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
oops, I renamed all my icons because I'm wierd and anal like that and broke all the links. >.<

If they go for it again, maybe they'll make it a male companion getting jealous. Its variety AND a gay agenda. Oh happy days!

I shall join you in mourning. Why'd they have to leave? And I never ever thought I'd be sad to see a bad guy get killed. Silly John Simm messing with my world-view like that >>;

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh, I would love Rusty to push the gay agenda just for the sake of making the rightwing tabloids explode! Ban this sick filth etc!

John Simm has magical powers. This is the only possible reason I can think of for mourning the death of a supervillain.

[identity profile] bishwop.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Further proof that the Master's mind is as filthy as my own... He's had a dirty, sweaty Jack chained up all sexual like. For a year.
I KNOW! God, that was hot.

did anyone else think for a moment that RTD had resurrected the Daleks AGAIN?
YES! The face looked like the Daleks from the Manhattan episodes.

"You mean you're just gonna... keep me?" DO NOT PUT THIS IMAGE IN MY BRAIN. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SLEEP
LOOOOOOL!

Is it just me, or was that funeral pyre pure Return of the Jedi?
Possibly. ...When was there a funeral pyre in RoTJ?

Martha's leaving... This whole scene is played with such grace by the pair of them, it breaks my heart.
Mine too! When she said about thinking she was second best and then ... "But I'm pretty good" I just really felt for her.

There's a whole lot of other stuff you say here that I agree with but if I responded to everything it would basically just be "...I agree!....I agree with that too!...I concur!" so...yeah. I'll leave it there =D

I got so excited about this episode that I didn't fully acknowledge the finale-ness of it. No more Ten! Until CHRISTMAS! Aaaaaaaaaah. *sobs*

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
:D
Twill be a long six months until the return of the Ten-nant. Although I like to think that the Titanic = Wet Shirt Doctor.

RE: chainage- Thinking about it now, I'm sort of "oh yeah, immortal, blah blah blah restraints" but at the time I was like "COME. ON. What are you trying to do to the viewing public?"

Especially since Jack was *obviously* loving it. Ahem.

The pyre in RotJ is at the end when Luke burns Vader's body. The scene just really reminded me of it, especially the torch and the camera angles and stuff. In fact, if you've ever seen Spaced, it's like when Tim burns his Star Wars memorabilia...

[identity profile] bishwop.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The thought of Wet Shirt Doctor positively FILLS me with fangirl joy.

"oh yeah, immortal, blah blah blah restraints"
See, that hadn't even crossed my mind, lol. I just thought it was...punishment, I guess. But that definitely makes more sense =P

Okay, I really should have known that about the pyre. I did guess it was that. I've just only seen that film once in full and I really don't remember that scene! Heh. Empire Strikes back is my favourite, anyway.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, the water would be pretty cold. Shivering!Doctor? I'm not sure why, but I really like that idea. Does that make me kind of a sadist? I hope not...

Yeah, I suppose anyone would seem more of a threat to security than Martha's Foolish Family. Plus he's been a Very Bad Man and the Master is displeased.

Empire is my favourite too, I have real trouble making it through RotJ without falling asleep!

[identity profile] buffologist.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking Xena with the pyre. I think they have one at least every finale... I realise this doesn't speak very highly of my viewing habits!!!

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh, Xena. Although, I have to admit, I think I preferred Hercules.

Channel 5. Happy days.

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
yay for a postive post :)

Jack is yearning for his team! *coughIantocough*
yes please. Jack/Ianto is love.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I seem to be in the minority at the moment! I'm such a child though, I just squee through the entire episode. I'm sure there'll be things that annoy me soon enough (like the underuse of Jack- grrr! Then again, the FOB reveal made me forget all about that...)

Ohh, Jack/Ianto. I'm currently living in fear that they're going to pursue Jack/Gwen...
ext_10830: Jewellrey (Default)

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid that's a minority where I am not included, but I'm glad someone is positive about my beloved Who.

and I am very very annoyed at the underuse of Jack. I know plenty of people who will use him better ;)

FOB totally angered me. I may have to spend some time in a place called Denial for a while, cos I really really really did not like that.

Jack/Gwen? Urgh. I can see Jack & Gwen, but Jack/Ianto will always be the best.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, there's always someone willing to use and/or abuse our Jack! *coughIantocough*

Hmm, FOB. 5 billion years is an awfully long time to spend in a jar, especially if you're as randy as the captain.

ext_10830: Jewellrey (Default)

[identity profile] glitterfairy25.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. I think Jack/Ianto fic is the only way I'm gonna stay sane after all this nonsense after the DW finale.

hmm, yeah, how will he manage it? I mean I know he's lost the rest of his body, and developed those wierd tentacle things, but I'm sure Jack would still get randy... Nurse Hame is Ianto who's gone through a similar body change process where every bit gets changed right?

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was some experiment with alien tech that went wrong, and Ianto is trapped in the body of a cat... or something? It's gotta be Ianto, though. Novice Hame was so tender...

[identity profile] catang.livejournal.com 2007-06-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I just say a huge THANK YOU for posting this because scrolling through my flist I was starting to lose the will to live with all the bad reviews :( although some have a point I enjoyed the ep as a whole and you picked up on EXACTLY the same stuff! So basically THANK YOU again for writing it all down lol

Will shut up now. nite x

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, you're welcome, although I hasten to point out that I basicaly just write down all the squeeful thoughts that pop into my head when watching the episode. I suspect that if I wrote it later it wouldn't be quite so positive!

I know what you mean about other posters though, I read them and think "oh crap, you're right!"

[identity profile] templa-otmena.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sophie! Breathless, breathless Sophie :D

First off- 'some sort of creepy floor teepee'. THIS is why you are a Literature student :D I love on the Confidential how The Tennant remarked how he had nothing to do- it was all John Simm running around and he just sat there. But oooooh, it was all in those eyes. I've been searching the internet all morning for Tiny!Doctor to no avail. So, so presh. First The Master keeps The Doctor in a cage and then The Doctor wants to keep The Master in The TARDIS. I concur with the 'DO NOT PUT THIS IMAGE IN MY BRAIN. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SLEEP' sentiments.

I love, love, love Martha. The hugging in this episode (and throughout the series) "Never waste time on a hug!" has been divine and not *coughcough*smug*coughcough*. The Tennant's face when he's hugging Martha good-bye was heartbreaking- as was his acting. He has commented lately how he wants to get back on stage and one can only imagine (unless you're [livejournal.com profile] _faeriequeen, of course :D).

And Jack. I fell asleep last night being very unsettled by his Face of Boe status. Mainly because Emily insiste don wacthing every scene that Boe has ever appeared in, making more more angsty and sad for Jack than ever. It did occur to me though that in Utopia The Doctor commented that Jack would only ever be satisfied with himself- or something like that- and that Boe is asexual. Jack still kinda cheeky. One of my fav moments of the night was Em examining the screen in New Earth and commenting "Oh my god! He has ovaries!".
What gets me most though is the sheer heartwrenching spoilers in 'Torchwood', i.e. "the right kind of Doctor" and is just seemed like 'Doctor Who' couldn't match that. Hmmmmm...

I feel like we have to write to Rusty and own up to our late night conversations :D Is there a number that we should call? Some sort of time that we should serve? ...combing The Tennant's hair, perhaps?!

Plus did not like the director. On Confidential he blatantly ignored David and you could feel the tension.

Excellent re-cap- must dash off to watch one more time this morning :D

If you see any Tiny!Doctor's send them my way. Scar-wee. Love you, Wifey xXx

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you are creepy. While TeenyDoc may have had the eyes of The Tennant, he was still slightly repulsive. Wasn't that the point? That the Master completely degraded him?

I cannot stress how much I approve of the Caged Timelord school of tension, though. Grrrr.

I KNOW! NOT EVEN A HINT OF SMUG! Any time they did something awesome, it was just joy as opposed to self-satisfaction. Oh, Martha. I love you so.

I'm not sure how I'm reacting to the FOB thing in the cold light of day. I love that Jack got to die with the Doctor, and 5 billion years of angst and so forth, but.... head in a jar. ALSO, I am beyond creeped out by that bit in The long Game where it's announced that he's PREGNANT!!!! MPREG!!!!!!! NOOOOO!!!!!

I know what you mean, FOB aside there wasn't much emotional stuff going on for Jack, especially after a whole season of yearning on Torchwood. Aside from the whole THE ENDING OF THE SERIES DOESN'T MATCH WITH DW thing (not bitter, honestly), the clash of tones was just a bit jarring. Although, I love both ANGSTY Jack and FLIRTY Jack and there's room for both!

I don't think we should apologise to Rusty, because he was still enough of a dick to include a Rose reference! And to imply that no companion ever will ever be as good as Rose!

That director did seem a bit of a cock, didn't he? Although Confidential did clarify that gender query I had about that urchin in Utopia!

Love you, miss you... Harry Potter, Harry Potter! xxx

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, Martha on TORCHWOOD?!!!!

[identity profile] annacoriander.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! I'm here because I'm nosy and I end up reading people's journals when they leave me comments :) So I have stuff to say about things!

I think I want to be Lucy Saxon a little bit
Sighh yes. Only I wouldn't shoot him. This has been the problem with John Simm - no matter HOW evil the Master got, I've always been totally "I love you!"

"You mean you're just gonna... keep me?"
AAAGHHH!

Despite everything I said earlier, the Master looks razor fine in his dressing gown and bed hair.
Best few seconds. Ever.

She has such complete and utter faith in him - it's one of the things she has in common with Rose
Rose kind of stopped believing in him during the Christmas Invasion. In all fairness, he looked completely different all of a sudden and was asleep.. but still! This time round the Doctor's pretty helpless again (rather old and in an odd tent or very old and tiny and caged) but as you say, she never gives up on him <3

Anyway. Yes. I'll leave you in peace now :D

OH apart from to say that the song's the Scissor Sisters' "I Can't Decide" if you were still wondering - and according to my media player's play count thing, I've listened to it 12 times since yesterday. Obsessive, much?

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I do that too! :)

The Wonder That Is John Simm does tend to make you forget that he's supposed to be the bad guy when he's being so damn hot. So Simm + Tennant + the verb "to keep" = a rather flustered me.

And thanks for the song!

[identity profile] psychie.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
SO, series as a whole, i loved it! My favourite thus far. What about you?

Titanic better be in the new series. That was amazing.

John Simm is amazing and I love when he danced.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a really strong series, definitely better than 2, but 1 still has a special place in my heart. Ohh, Eccleston, I loved you so. I'll have to consider before I commit myself!

A Titanic Christmas special! I wonder how far they can stretch the Beeb's effects budget?

And John Simm's dancing is godly. Oh my.

[identity profile] psychie.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. I do love Eccleston. He's amazing in Jude. Heartbreaking.

They better stretch it because I want to see the Doctor on the Titanic@@

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh, Jude. That film and that performance are just gutwrenchingly beautiful. Plus he takes his clothes off.

Mmmm, Soggy!Doctor...

[identity profile] jakeybob.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ooh, and if anybody can Name That Tune (the one with the dance routine of awesome) I would be eternally grateful..."

Came across your LJ while searching for an answer to the above question myself... anyway, I eventually found the following info on the BBC site...enjoy!

"The Master seems to be a Scissor Sisters fan. He's singing along to I Can't Decide from their Ta-Dah album on the flight deck of the Valiant."

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for that, I'll see if I can track it down and recreate the moment!

[identity profile] clouded-logic.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I still get a kick out of seeing John Barrowman's name in the opening credits.

So glad I'm not the only one. :D

John Simm's kissing technique is SO HOT.

Toclofane! Daleks! I thought so too! I really hoped it wasn't though, because they are so overused considering how utterly lame they are.

Invincible - I love that song. <3

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-07-04 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
We have to savour Barrowman!Who credits as they are so very rare, and since the Torchwood credits are about 8 seconds long.

It is UNBELIVABLY HOT. All openmouthed and delicious and GUH. I tell you, for a family show, it didn't half get me flustered.

It's even better live :D
