Southport: Dare I Say, Bearable?

Last night was the first proper night out with the majority of my Port-based lovelies all holiday, and it was most likely the last, since half of them are going back to uni at the weekend. Good thing it was fucking hardcore, then.

So, Faye got home on Wednesday night and promptly phoned me, because I'm clearly the greatest person in The Port. As the pair of us have a combined income of ZERO at the moment, we decided it best that we just wander around, mocking the locals/yokels and generally enjoying the sunshine. So we did. And then we sat on the prom drinking wine.

Faye's old youth drama group were doing Midsummer Night's Dream, so we decided to sally forth and view it, both out of a sense of loyalty and a morbid curiosity. Anyway, it turned out to be far less of a travesty than I was anticipating. The set and the lighting were absolutely gorgeous, the costumes were nicely done, there were some pretty good performances. As in, the kids (she says knowingly... they're like a year or two younger than me) actually seemed to understand what they were saying. Although, there were numerous occasions where I wanted to slap a few of them and scream "PUT THE EMPHASIS IN THE RIGHT PLACE, YOU'RE DISRUPTING THE METER!" And Helena was slightly too squawky for my liking. Bottom was righteous, however. David was playing him, and we love David. David is going to be a famous comedian. Also, they had a female Puck, which I really liked. I thought it made the Oberon/Puck dynamic rather interesting.

So, after our injection of culture, we did the only rational thing and headed for the pub. Twas Luke's last niight, so merriment was made. 2 and half hours later... Underground!

Underground is one of my favourite places in Southport. When it opened, it was like Jesus. Last night proves my point. They played Golden Skans by Klaxons, immediately followed by Bigmouth Strikes Again by The Smiths, and then No One Knows by QotSA. I hearts it, I do. Plus, everyone was out, so I felt rather popular for knowing people. And danced like a mutha, obviously. And my Emma was out, as was her brother Adam, who is awesome. Every time I see that boy his hair is bigger. He bought me chips! I plan to take this as a sign of betrothal.

Oh, and I saw Creepy Waitrose Ollie. If I've told anyone the significance of Creepy Waitrose Ollie... Yeah.

So Southport doesn't suck all the time. Just most of the time.

Big Atonement trailer! Watch it here!

Memey goodness, stolen from [livejournal.com profile] whywastewords and [livejournal.com profile] aliasness

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Paperbacks are easier to read, but hardbacks look pretty on my shelf.

Amazon or brick and mortar?
I love bookshops, but Amazon has saved my skin many a time.

Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Borders, baby!

Bookmark or dog-ear?
I don't usually do either, I remember the page number. I have just bought a bookmark, though.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
It's pretty random, but if I did sort it out, by author is the way to go.

Keep, throw away, or sell?
This question has actually caused major, marriage-threatening arguments in our household. My dad is a book junkie. My mother likes to be able to walk up the stairs with out books falling on her head. I couldn't throw away a book.

Keep dust jacket or toss it?
Keep it.

Read with dust jacket or remove it?
Wait, you can remove it? And that isn't cheating? That has never occurred to me before. I'm totally going to do that. Fuck you, Deathly Hallows dust jacket!

Short story or novel?
I think both can be extremely effective, but I like the depth of a novel.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry all the way.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When tired, although I will usually push on till the end of a chapter.

"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
"It was a dark and stormy night"

Buy or borrow?
Buy. I'm a hoarder (thanks, genetics!)

New or used?
I like new books, but second-hand-book shopping is unbelievably fun.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendations, or browse?
I buy stuff if I like the author, if I've heard good things, or just on a whim if it looks interesting.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Both. As long as it's effective, I don't care.

Morning reading, afternoon reading, or nighttime reading?
Anytime. Usually in bed or in the bath.

Stand-alone or series?
Both.

Favorite series?
Harry Potter, although HM for His Dark Materials.

Favorite children's book?
Harry Potter, although it's not just for kids! HDM, likewise. Alternatively, The Secret Garden.

Favorite YA book?
I read all of Sweet Valley High. And The Babysitters Club. I'm a bad person. And I had a Judy Blume phase.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
Michael Chabon: The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier & Clay
I'm sure people know it, but nobody I know does.

Favorite books read last year?
Donna Tartt: The Secret History
Michael Chabon: The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier & Clay
Lionel Shriver: We Need To Talk About Kevin

Favorite books of all time?
Ian McEwan: Atonement
Margaret Mitchell: Gone With The Wind
Jane Austen: Persuasion

Least favorite book you finished last year?
I can't think of any that I hated, so it was probably just something bland and forgettable.

What are you reading right now?
Mary Shelley: Frankenstein

What are you reading next?
My reading list, so probably Mansfield Park. I still need to finish The Master And Margarita, too.

Favorite book to recommend to an eleven-year-old?
Malorie Blackman: Noughts And Crosses

Favorite book to reread?
Harry Potter

Do you ever smell books?
Doesn't everyone?

Do you ever read primary source documents?
Yes. Once a history student, always a history student.

And finally: The cast list for S&S07!
David Morissey isn't on there, but he has been confirmed as Colonel Brandon by the BBC! Dominic Cooper was great in The History Boys, and I think he'll be a suitably charismatic Willoughby. Dan Stevens was the lead in The Line Of Beauty, so I'll love him forever. Excited now!

Oh, and I bought Northanger Abbey on DVD!

EDIT: I found this and it made me happy.

I have an affinity for A Midsummer Night's Dream. I was in it when I was 13. ♥ Shakespeare.

I just got Atonement out of the library so I can be legitimately excited about the movie.

And I must steal this meme.

Ooh, who were you? It makes me sad that my school never did Shakespeare, and thus denied me my rightful career on the stage. I was the female lead in the Nativity when I was six, though. Who did I play, you ask? Surely Mary?

No, I was Why the spacegirl, and the miracle of Christmas was explained to me by four carol singers. I had to wear a cycling helmet covered in tinfoil.

Atonement is my favourite novel of all time, ever. Pay attention when you're reading it, the ending will kick you in the stomach and then loom over you as you cry tears induced by its genius.

That... is... so... classic.

It wasn't actually for school. The former minister at my church's husband ran a theater group through the church. He also wrote a play that ended up on off-Broadway. My mom did the costumes. It was kind of neat.

He also did a series of "missing moments" from the Bible for various churches. I was Mary in one of them. I still can remember most of my 5 minute soliloquy.

And I forgot to say: I was Cobweb. I had a grey leotard and grey tights and I was wrapped in Saran Wrap. My entrance? Swinging in on a rope. I got mad bruises on my leg.

[identity profile] sophieisgod.livejournal.com 2007-04-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeeee. I love that your mother would think 'What's an appropriate costume for my thirteen year old daughter? Cling film.'

I always get mixed up re: the fairies... Is Cobweb the one with all the lines? Or did you just swing in on a rope like a ready-to-microwave Tarzan and say 'And I'? Actually, one of the fairies in the show I saw MISSED THAT CUE. Like, her one line. She may have been special nee, I'm uncertain.

That was the year we had a new headteacher, and she was all "We're Catholic, yes, but we can have fun, too! See how we connect with the youth through sci-fi!"

Actually, the strongest memory I have of that play, other than my stellar performance, is the use of Chis De Burgh on the soundtrack. Scarred me for life.

[identity profile] darkangsty42.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I did have a handful of lines, but we also switched up some of the lines so I was sort of the leader of the bunch.

And that video is the cutest thing ever. I haven't heard that song in a million years.
