Stuff What Has Happened Recently
So, I'm back at home (jobhunting), we have a new government and the country is underwater. Plus stuff has been on the telly.
Do you see? With the fake cut text? Because they played that when Blair got elected way back when? And we are currently in a Bit Of A Mess. Do you see? Anyway, Gordon Brown is Prime Minister, and I think this is A Good Thing. I am, however, aware that some of you may disagree *coughKathryncough* and I encourage debate on this most noble of subjects. Alls fair and each to their own and whatnot. I just think that he's not as oily as Tony Blair, and he was pretty good with the economy (understatement) and he's got the right idea about constitutional reform and I generally like him. I know a lot of people think he's a bit brusque for public office, and he's a bit awkward, and he's obviously not the smooth public speaker that Blair was, but is that a bad thing? I find it quite refreshing. I mean, I'm a bit awkward. Does that make me a bad person? Does it make me shifty and untrustable? Also, he has broad shoulders.
Anyway, I like his cabinet. Ed Balls with a great big ministry! Woop woop! Both the Milibands (whose name always makes me think of millipedes, which makes me think of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which makes me happy)! Jack Straw! The first female Home Secretary! So, yes. Excited. And all sorts of good things are happening, like appointing a Foreign Sec who doesn't like the war, and devolving more power back to parliament and so forth. Yes. A Good Thing. I watched it all live on the news, the handover. I felt quite excited, history in the making and all that. Good speech, too. Although
templa_otmena did stare at me like I was crazy, I think it's important to know and it's important to care. My A-Level Politics teacher Ben "VOLUME" Williams would be proud of me. APATHY IS NOT COOL, NO IT IS NOT.
It is very wet at home. I cannot go to the beach. I cannot even walk on the pier because it is made of wood and thus slippy. This is depressing, because there is not much to do in Southport if one canst not meet one's friends for a cool and tasty beverage on the promenade. However, at least my house is not underwater, unlike thousands of people. Global warming is really starting to freak me out now, and it's probably too late to effect any real change, which is depressing, isn't it? Oh well, I've got energy-efficient lightbulbs. Has anyone seen An Inconvenient Truth? Any good?
Rome is back on the Beeb and I am infatuated all over again! However, I am angered by their decision to show it on Wednesdays and Sundays, flinging it out in a hurried manner as if it were not the MOST EXPENSIVE TV SHOW EVER MADE. But it does mean I get to see what happens sooner, which I like. Hey, I'm a complex woman. So I think we're now 4 eps in, and Young Octavian has been replaced with Mr Bingley, who is now vaguely creepy as opposed to adorable and ducklike like he was in P&P. However, it cannot be denied that it is this very creepy essence which makes Octavian so very awesome. More importantly, we now have Agrippa! I have been excited about Agrippa ever since I saw caps of him at
alexandral's journal, because he is most delicious and also very sweet with Octavia (let's face it, any one who isn't her brother is progress for her). And hot. Oh my. And let us not forget the original Manly Men That I Love, Pullo and Vorenus! With more angst than ever! And also violence! I do believe that they are my very top team of Brothers In Arms type deep platonic-but-they-touch-alot man love (Sam and Gene from Life On Mars would be up there, but they're blatantly having it off). It is going to be magnifique.
Any flisties watching Hollyoaks? It's okay, we don't have to be ashamed anymore! Russell T Davies said it had evolved into something "delicate and beautiful" in the Radio Times! Anyway, exciting stuff has been going down, not least Craig and John Paul (har har har). We got an actual "I love you" from Craig(!), and some very cute kissing and necktouching and what have you. Meanwhile, in The Plot That I Didn't Care About Because Craig And John Paul Were Getting DOWN, Clare got pushed off a balcony, and I must admit that they did a good job of setting up the suspects. There was a very intriguing montage.
Also, tonight there was a new episode of The Thick Of It, which is one of my most favouritest sitcoms ever. It's political, like. And there was lots of glorious swearing. And Malcolm Tucker, a truly awesome character who I am a little bit in love with even though he says things like "Come the fuck in or fuck the fuck off". And it's always beautifully topical and good and I love it.
Oh, and this is what Agrippa looks like:

And finally, I'm horribly behind the times but any HP fans need to read
shoebox_project, because it has eaten my soul. It is like lovely, beautiful crack.
Catherine Tate is coming back as Donna! I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, I can't quite remember how positive I was about her at Christmas! I did quite like the character (I think), and THANK FUCK it's not another young woman, but she's a bit... irritating? I shall ponder.
