Life On Mars, You Broke Me
Last one ever...
Okay, beautiful random thoughts first, coherent analysis later.
As I watched it, I had an overwhelming sense of nostalgia for the credits! As in, 'this is the last credits EVER. Never again shall I see My TV Boyfriend Philip Glenister doing a power reverse with a sandwich in his mouth. Well, I will, but it won't be the same.' At least the episode graced us with one final power reverse...
"Training college?"
"RoboCop."
Ohh, Sam and Annie in Sam's room. John Simm is really rather sexy when he wants to be. The eyebrow raise? Oh my. And I was SO happy they reprised the hand-on-heart thing. And he knows he's going but he wants to be with her anyway...
"Spend the night with me, Annie."
She's a stronger woman than I.
Gene's sartorial choices rock, as ever. I loved the grey suit/ white shirt/ black tie combo, but Undercover!Gene definitely did it for me as well.
"It's not the Famous Five, Chris."
"Don't spoil it, Boss!"
Anything relating to Manchester being 'Gene's city'. Alright, he might have dodgy methods, but he's moral in a very odd way. He wants to protect people! I love him!
I love Gene using a trainset and chalk to plan an operation. More than words can possibly express.
MARS! It means something! I can't remember what, exactly... Metropolitan Accountability and Reconciliation.... What's the 'S'? Anyone?
Baby Chris' short sleeves. As ever. Also, Baby Chris' train hat.
"Will you... Will you just hold me? Please?"
Hyde Ward 2612
"Get off, I'm not a fairy!"
"She sounds enigmatic."
"No, she was from Barnsley!"
"Nancy arsed fairy boy..."
"Such elegant banter..."
Okay, thoughts on plot points/ending/ways in which the entire production team is awesome:
A general lack of Gene in the episode, which made me slightly sad, but John Simm was so unbelievably brilliant that I forgive everyone.
The whole tumour/Gene parallel made me so very very sad. I knew for months that it had to end with Sam trying to bring down the department, and also that he would obviously change his mind at some point, but God. It hurt when he was being all undercover. And it really highlighted just how nasty some of Gene's methods are.
The graveyard scene... Lord. Just... ach. It was so completely NOT what I was expecting (although I'm sure a lot of people had worked out something similar) that it was truly immense. And John Simm being Broken!Sam made me cry. And he still cared about Gene! "It'll kill him..." So much love.
So then, we had Sam's Confession. And the thing that was the most painful and angsty (and therefore the best) about this scene was Baby Chris' reaction. I LOVE the Sam/Chris relationship, it's completely one of my favourite things about the show, and he just looked so wounded.
"I looked up to you, Sam."
And then Annie completely belting him one. He's had that coming since the first episode, really.
And then I was basically in tears from the moment the train stopped. Gene saying "Tell me this isn't true." Baby Chris in bits on the floor because he doesn't want to die. Annie reaching out and grabbing Sam's arm. Sam promising.
Frank BASTARD Morgan leaving everyone to die, and Sam's complete and utter distress at this. I actually burst into tears (loud, noisy sobs) when Chris got shot. I screamed when Gene got shot. My heart tore when Annie screamed after Sam.
And then, when Sam woke up, I'm glad I was alone in the house because I was repeating over and over "Go back, go back, go back..."
And crying.
I loved the way everything got tied together. The reprise of "My name is Sam Tyler..."
The complete contrast of 2006 policing with 1973
The way Sam looked completely numb.
Life On Mars kicking back in...
I'd been suspecting something was going to happen on the roof since the hand-on-heart thing, but this was just beautiful. Fucking Beautiful. When a show has its lead character look so blissfully happy about jumping off a roof...
HE WENT BACK FOR THEM!!!! FUCKING YEAH!!!!!
And everything is beautiful and everyone is friends! And a kiss! And banter! And Bowie! And Sam changing the channel on the radio! And Test Card Girl TURNING OFF THE SCREEN!
"Stay. Here. Forever."
If that doesn't win a shitload of BAFTAs, I will hurt people.
