I Love Television

Because of the whole Wicked fandango, I missed Doctor Who on Saturday. In addition to, you know, missing it, I've had to wander around LJ with my eyes squeezed closed and my fingers jammed firmly in my ears, going "la la la" rather loudly. Thankfully, after an agonising day, I caught the BBC Three repeat. That plus Persuasion equals one good night of telly.


Firstly, thank god. Martha is awesome. She's not Rose, and she isn't trying to be. She's more grown-up and she's a bit more sure of herself. She challenged the Doctor right from the start. And I like that she has a big family. Plus, she's obviously hot for the Doctor... Okay, maybe not so different from Rose. Still, she's got potential. The whole kiss of life/ passing out/ saving his life thing made me happy. I mean, she didn't even know him and she recognised that he was the only one who could help, that it was more important for him to survive. I like that.

God, I'm so fickle. Rose/Doctor completely broke me, and I heart them forever, but I really wouldn't be averse to shipping Martha/Doctor. Obviously, it's a completely different dynamic... It looks like RTD's pushing the unrequited love angle. Oh god, unrequited love. I think they're going to be good together.

To echo every other reaction post ever: The Hair. Magnifique. He has, indeed, "still got it". Plus, Converse dancing. And bare feet. And the new suit. Yep, I still love The Tennant.

Okay, upside down rain, rhino police, vampires, ticking time bomb of limited air supply. All good. Excellent first episode, methinks.



I think Persuasion might be my favourite Austen novel. It's not as sparkly as P&P, and the characters aren't as young as in the other books, but goddammit if I don't love Wentworth to infinity. And I loved the adaptation.

Sally Hawkins was well cast, I thought. And if you haven't seen her in Fingersmith, you should.

It was all about Rupert Penry-Jones, though. The man can pine. And he gives good longing stares. And he looks good when wet. And HE TOOK OFF HIS CRAVAT. And he lifted her onto the cart like she was a feather. Sigh. And swoon for good measure. Thank the lord they bumped Wentworth's part up slightly. The more screentime, the better.

I love Rome, and thus I squeed a little bit when I saw Tobias Menzies as Mr Elliot. He wasn't quite as slwazy as Sam West, which made a nice change, plus he was tall.

The adaptation was really pretty, it had that sort of slightly grainy look which I like (and would make fantabulous icons, all you makers). I did like Anne looking directly at camera during her voiceovers, but sometimes the director chose some pretty random angles which got a bit distracting. There was one seem which seemed to be shot Peep Show POV style. Random.

Anyway, I cried.


Also, I am veryveryvery excited about David Morrissey playing Colonel Brandon. And it's my mum's birthday!

I luff Persuasion. How would you compare it to the 1995 version? Because that version is absolutely one of my favorite book-to-film adaptations ever.

OMPH!! I MISSED "Persuasion" with all this cleaning!. It is my favourite novel too . Oh noooooooooo! I see if I can still catch it on Teleport

Persuasion was good, with Rupert on top form. I can never make out Lady Russell's character though. Did she really mean well, or is she just a snob?

Doctor Who was awesome. But actually I thought (in my humble opinion) - after the whole long Doctor/Rose debacle - them having Martha and the Doctor kiss their first episode was their way of making it so they can never really get together. Yes, she thinks he's hot - but its David Tennant, who wouldn't (clearly, not Anne Robinson) - but I think by them starting there they can only be friends after unless too long in the galaxy makes them feel the need to procreate to continue the species - although he since he's a Time Lord they would create a different species entirely.
But anyways.

persuasion was lovely. There was much Rupert swooning on my part. I hadn't read the novel when I watched it but found it in the library yesterday and have been reading it since (so I'm 3/4 finished now) and I'm also glad that there's more of the wonderful Captain Wenworth in the film. But I'll write more about my thoughts on that - as well as other Austen films - when I can next make an entry.
Although I did quite like Mr Elliot until it turned out he was vying to get himself a mistress as well.

Colonel brandon? You mean there is to be another S&S adaptation?? Pray, do tell!

I love Persuasion, especially with Ciaran Hinds, but I just found out that they are making a new Persuasion, due out in November of this year. for a TV adaptation. I am quite curious as to how it will turn out. Obviously not as good as the '95 version!!
